Perthe's disease - anyone got info?

have been told DS2 latest x-rays for development dysplasia of his hips have shown abnormalities consistent with Perthe's disease. Have googled it and got descriptions and diagrams but wondered if anyone has any first hand knowledge they can share? Still laughing at "bed rest" being a possible course of treatment and thinking of ways i can bribe my four year old son to stay still...?!!!

many thanks in advance.... Outnumbered

There are several people here with experience of this and there have been threads in the past so I?m sorry no one has been along to advise. They usually operate if it is Perthes and post-op yup, bed rest will be required. DS spent 6 weeks on bed rest (total not even allowed up to go the the toilet), followed by 6 weeks in a wheelchair and another 8 on crutches. It?s a long old process I?m afraid but worth it in the end.

Oh dear,I know a lad who has it IRL (diagnosed less than a year ago). He's 7 & his mum is finding it impossible to keep him still. Nobody has talked about operating (yet). He uses a wheelchair a lot of the time, but is galloping off otherwise every time his mum's back is turned. This is majorly risky, the whole hip could pop out suddenly.

I think it's a spectrum condition so you really need an individual assessment from an expert, about what it will mean to you & yours. I think you are lucky, the younger diagnosed the better the prognosis.

My Nephew was diagnosed aged 8. He had to give up football etc & had to use crutches for a couple of years (Consultant said they don't use wheelchairs any longer & no need for complete bed rest, just that he was to stop running around & be sensible - quite hard, even for an 8 year old). He was given exercises to do & encouraged to go swimming as often as possible.

Two years down the line, his hips are fine Smile. He's back running & playing footie (not that he ever totally stopped - he was very good at controlling the ball with his crutch!!)

He still has a slight limp, but this is down to muscle wastage and physiotherapist has assured him that if he does regular exercises this will go away in time.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We were due to be discharged from our orthopedic consultant next month as DS2 hips are now fine but then this came up....!! :(

We saw our Peadiatric orthopedic consultant yesterday and she said it was too early to tell if it is Perthe's or not and we need to go back in 3 months. She has been treating my DS2 since he was about a week old for his hip dysplacia so i trust her judgement. In the meantime though DS2 has to try and rest his hip as much as possible. thanks again for all the helpful replies and i will keep you all posted on any progress.....
