Dark Spot In Child's mole

My eight year old son has a mole which is regular in shape and light brown. I noticed this morning that it now has a dark spot on the outer edge and I am panicking that this is a change that needs investigating. Am just panicking really and was hoping for some reassurance that this isnt cancer! Will try to get him seen by the GP tomorrow but know I am in a for day of worry!

Best to get it checked out yes, but don't worry right now.

I had a funny looking mole on the back of my leg, went to dermatologist who cut it out to be safe and had it tested. All fine.

See Gp, but also take a photo of it on a regular basis to see if it is changing.

What bruffin said. In fact, that's what the GP told us to do when we took ds1 with his. Ds's turned out to be simply a spot that had coincidentally grown up in that area - was v worrying at the time but cleared up and went back to normal very quickly and has been fine ever since.

Dh has a couple of moles on his face that have changed over the years. GP noticed on a visit for something different and referred him to the hospital. All that happens is he goes to see them and have them checked and photographed every 3 months. They don't think it's anything sinister but the continued monitoring is reassuring.

Yup, get it checked out, but don't worry. DD2 has a birthmark on her head which was noticeable as a baby but not visible easily since her hair grew thicker. Recently we noticed a black raised mark in the middle of it and totally freaked. We were referred to a dermatologist, who confirmed that it was nothing dangerous, but also advised us to keep a close eye on it for any further changes.

However, only a dermatologist can confirm this - a GP doesn't have the expertise, IMO.
