Urinary tract infection in 4 year old

my daughter has been diagnosed with a UTI this afternoon. As expected she has been given antibiotics. What I wasn't expecting was for the doctor to refer me to a paediatrician and ask for a renal ultrasound and further investigations. She said it is standard procedure for a first UTI. Can anyone shed any light?

yes, it is standard, just on the offchance that there is a physiological cause for the infection. However, normally UTIs are "just one of those things".
dd1 had recurrent UTIs from 15mo to 3yo, and so went through all the tests. She, like most, is completely fine, and just prone to them.
The ultrasound is obviously completely painless, and the paediatrician will probably also give her a physical exam around the kidney area. dd1 was also asked to remove her nappy so the doctor could briefly check her vulva, but this was just a visual examination.
She also had a DMSA scan at a later date, which involved a needle going into her hand, but this was very quick and easy.
