Urinary tract infection in 4 year old

my daughter has been diagnosed with a UTI this afternoon. As expected she has been given antibiotics. What I wasn't expecting was for the doctor to refer me to a paediatrician and ask for a renal ultrasound and further investigations. She said it is standard procedure for a first UTI. Can anyone shed any light?

My daughter & son (who have both had UTI's) have never been referred for a renal ultrasound. Sorry I can't shed any light but do let us know what happens. Good luck.

One of my dd's who is now 9 started to get uti's at 2.5.

Sadly for her our doctors were utterly shite and often refused to give ab's saying there was nothing wrong or gave her the wrong sort. She was hospitalised at 4 due to a massive kidney infection, intravenous ab's the works.
Soo the upshot is she was finally referred for a renal ultrasound. This showed that the reason she was getting infections was because one of the valves leading from the tubes to the bladder was backwashing wee back up to the kidneys. That is why they will be checking.
My dd also had extensive scarring on one kidney because the infections had been left to go on for so long.
It's great that your doctor is so on the ball. Hopefully your dd will get the all clear but if she doesn't she can be treated appropriately.
As far as the backwashing is concerned, dd's consultant said it normally rights itself by 6 or so. It did in my dd's case. She has had no invasive treatments. But has ongoing scans to check how her kidneys are doing.(no so great)
Take all the investigations you can get, better to be safe than sorry
