My son had a minor injury to his leg a few weeks ago they did an xray and saw a lump on his bone next to a fracture, blood tests and an MRI scan were done and a couple of days later he was allowed home as they said it was swelling from the injury and nothing to worry about they said they would refer the results to a specialist to be certain but they were 99.9% sure it was fine.

Fast forward now and Ive recieved a letter saying that my son has had an appointment made at the Oncology clinic, needless to say I am now panicing after googling this :(

Has this happened to anyone else ? we were told it could be Bengin but why would we have to go to this appointment if thats the case ?
I have rang the hospital and they just said that the Dr was not worried as he has made the appointment for over a months time and did not want to rush it through

please please please can anyone reassure me as I am in floods of tears here and panicing :(

has anyone mentioned osteoid osteoma to you at all? It is a benign tumour (I have one) and can be often caused from a trauma to the bone. They do say they burn out within 33 months but I have had mine since I was 11 - I am 34 Grin it still gives me gip and they do not know why and I have small lump on my tibia, but nowhere near as bad as when I was 11. This was benign but I was reguarly checked at the hospital until I was 16.

Obviously it could not be this, but take some comfort that they are not rushing to see you. Could you see your GP in the meantime and explain your fears?

I am waiting for the fracture DR from hospital to ring me back but that will be tomorrow now, it was described on the hospital sheet as a benign bone tumour and they said when we were sent home that they didnt need to do anything to it, it would just go and they mentioned that it made sense as it was trauma to the bone so mabye it is that.
I cant help but worry though but on the phone they just said that the specialist wanted to check it, nothing about surgery or anything like that mabye its because of his age he is only 4 and theyre worried about it affecting his leg bone, I was just completley un prepared for this dont know how I am going to cope waiting over a month for the appt.

Forgot to say thank you for your post, you have helped me think of other things and not the worst.

I have just googled symtoms of what you described and it seems likely this is the problem as its common in young males and at the hospital they asked if ds has ever had problems with his leg and we could only think of very occasionally he will wake up at night crying saying his leg hurts (I always thought it was growing pains) however this is coming up as one of the symptoms so I will ask his DR about this tomorrow.

Can't help but just to say I really feel for you. Fingers crossed everything will be fine - they'd rush you through if they were concerned, I'm sure.

maxybrown · 09/05/2011 16:45

Oh yes, mine used to wake me as a child in the night all of the time! My dad took me to docs and they said it was build up of blood Hmm took me back and they sent me straight to hospital, but wasn't so panicky after all. Even now I can remember being asked to try and remember if I had had a bad bang to my leg.

I had some new checks done, prob about 9 years or so ago as it was giving me a lot of grief, so they did new scans etc, but all was fine - couldn't really tell me why I still get pain, just to take asprin.

Hope he is ok - and you Smile

The3Bears · 09/05/2011 16:57

Thank you, im feeling much better now that Im thinking it could just be harmless its just so hard not to panic damn google :(
I just wish they could explain more I have spoke to 2 Drs and they could not offer any more advice just told me not to worry, thinking about it logically if it was anything serious they would have sent me straight down and something would have been picked up on the blood tests etc, the head childrens Dr at Stepping Hill said it was 99.9% fine after the mri scan so mabye they just want to be sure it isnt going to effect his growth.

I cant thank you enough though for sharing your experience, it even says its most common on the Tibia bone which is where it is so it seems so likely its the same olbviously I wont know until I have spoken to the specialist.

Can I ask were you refered to a specialist?
we are having to travel to Birmingham which only made me panic more.

Ah, I am in Stockport too Grin

I was seen at Booth Hall Children's Hospital - but obviously they are gone now.

Why Birmingham and not Manchester Children's Hopsital? Sory not saying that to make you panic more!!

pallymama · 09/05/2011 17:07

I'll start off by pointing out that I'm not medically trained, and I have no background in Oncology or Orthopedics. I do have a fair amount of experience with hospital referals and associated time frames.

If it's taken several weeks for them to even book the appointment, it's not something that the consultant he's been refered to is very worried about. They've booked it without checking if the time suits, and told you by post, it sounds to me like it's just a routine referal. It's very common for patients to be refered to a specialist consultant just to make sure that there's nothing wrong.

I hope that helps in some way. Hope you're all ok.

The3Bears · 09/05/2011 17:13

Maxybrown They specialise in childrens bones and bumps etc we were told that they would send the results there after someone has looked at them at Manchester Childrens Hospital They said it was fine nothing to worry about but sent them to the specialist in Birmingham for a 2nd opinion. We went for a check up on April 29th and ds DR said that they might ask us to go down for a biopsy however there is nothing like this planned so surely this is good news. It does say arrive 20mins early as they might want to do an xray so olbviously its the bone they are worried about.

Thank you Pallymama that does help, You really cannot help but worry though when its your child can you, but I do feel alot better now that Ive had some reassurance. :)
