Ear infection... What do I do?

I have just noticed a shocking amount of dark wax in my 19-m-o's left ear. He has been fiddling with it a bit over the last day or so, and has always produced a lot of wax, but never seems in pain or discomfort. I have just taken out a solid ball of wax which was totally blocking his ear :(
Should I phone NHS direct or is it okay to wait til monday and the GP? He has no temp, good appetite, happy and filling his nappy as normal.

Feel really guilty about this... When he's been waxy I haven't worried because he is so well, but now that there is so much, I wonder if I should have done something sooner...

If it was an infection it would have been green pus oozing, well it has been in my ds case! If your worried take him to ooh but it sounds like he has really waxy ears!

That makes me feel better Clayre! It was so much that there was no way he could hear anything through it all, my poor boy.

my ds2 has really waxy ears, apparently he has a wide ear cannal hence the mass wax production, we know when its too waxy because he gets very loud, we treat it with olive oil. your little one sounds happy enough i would wait til monday

Little ones often have really waxy ears. The best way of ensuring that they get cleared is by making your child lie back in a warm bath every day and then cleaning them out very gently with cotton buds (without, of course, getting the cotton buds right down into the ear canal).

Ear infections often don't have a temperature with them. My eldest has them regularly and has perforated both drums now. If he's OK I'd leave it, keep an eye on him though because the infection could break unexpectedly in the middle of the night - which is how we found out the last two times - ear cries are the worst and unmistakable Sad you may not get much sense out of him if it does, we were convinced the first time she wasn't awake and was having a nightmare we couldn't wake her up from. If it happens get the calpol in and get to the out of hours doctor. Otherwise just wait until Monday.

Both my dds had / have wax problems . DD1 has cerulisna drops every 2 months to keep them clear especially in winter ( and regular ear checks)
DD2 had large amounts of wax at birth and up to about 24 mths produced large amounts in 'blobs' not sandy grains. This has now reduced. I would get his ears checked with the GP and if he has a regular build up they will advise you what to do.
