It seems ds2 has asthma, what do I need to know/do/think about beyond giving him his inhaler?

Ds2 was 4 this month. In February he had a cold type illness, after that he developed a night time cough that wouldn't go, started getting a bit wheezy at times and has gradually been getting a bit worse with a couple of quite bad attacks. We have seen doctors and he has an inhaler which we've been told to try for 6 weeks or so and then return to drs.

The inhaler does seem to work very well, in fact I've been surprised just how quickly it does work. He has eczema and we have a family history of asthma so I'm pretty sure thats what it is. I've been trying to look for triggers but obviously its early days. It has been worse on hot days when they've been outside playing lots, I think exercise definitely a trigger and probably pollen. His 2 worst attacks so far have been after playing outside on hot days but there were also dogs present both times, but has been around dogs without getting bad so I'm keeping an eye on that without drawing any conclusions as yet.

My dr gave me a print out on asthma and I have read some stuff on internet. I know the science behind it (at a fairly basic level), I know the signs and symptoms and some common triggers but I still feel theres an awful lot I don't know.

I was reading another thread tonight where people were saying that when their child was diagnosed with asthma they removed all soft furnishings, carpets etc. Should I be doing that?? I have laminate all downstairs and leather sofas but we're in the process of redecorating the boy's room and I was going to buy carpet this weekend as currently they just have a collection of rugs. Is that a really bad idea?

What else should I know or be doing or thinking about?

And does this mean I'm gonna have to buck up my ideas and start doing a proper job of cleaning and housework??? Shock

What inhaler has he been given? Is it a reliver (blue one - ventolin) or a preventer (normally brown?) if he has the blue inhaler if you give it before exercise that should help there.

The key is finding the triggers, with DS dust is a trigger so I have to keep everywhere tidy and polish his bedroom daily. My sister is asthmatic and her triggers are different to DS although I am still trying to learn what triggers DS and have at least one more to figure it seems!

There is an asthma parents thread on here which is great, as is the asthma uk website.
