Deep, long and broken splinters - treatment tips?

DS (3yo) got a huge long splinter in the palm of his hand just at the base of his fingers earlier today. He will not let me near him to remove it although DH and I have tried unsuccessfully and traumatically (DS is bloody strong). He was so upset we gave up and I have given DS a hot bath (which he objected to), dolloped loads of germolene on the splinter which has now broken into pieces under the skin and have put a bandage over it in the hope it will help draw the fragments out.

If I can't get it out tomorrow morning I will have to take him to the doctor I guess but can't help feeling I should be able to deal with this myself. Any tips?

same thing happened to us 2 weeks ago. Huge splinter in foot and two others in hand. DD wouldn't let us get near! Also way too strong to tweezer! We left it although we had fears it would get infected etc. but a coule of days ago they all came out. |I guess they wrok their way out as the skin grows and sheds. I would leave it and try not to worry. I certainly will in the future

I would leave it but it really seems to be bothering him - he is avoiding using that hand.

Anyone had any luck with poultices?

If it still there in a couple of days there's a risk of it getting infected, do your GP's have a nurse who would deal with things like this?
I've only had to deal with small splinters with DD but have found that leaving it a few days first helped, and then tackled it by asking her to watch the TV and not look while I tried to get it out, I explained it would hurt a little bit but I would be as careful as possible!

I'm abroad so we don't have GP practices like in the UK so we'd have to go to the specialist children's A&E which I am loathe to do but if needs must I will be knocking on the door.

I will keep on with the germolene and savlon and see if I can tempt him into a long warm bath tomorrow and then get Shaun the Sheep to work his wonders and have a go at extraction then.

thanks all.

Can you gat hold of Magnesium Sulphate paste where you are? You can get it from Boots here but I don't know where you are. It acts to draw out the foreign substances. Apply, cover with plaster and leave for 24 hours. Might be worth a go, if you can get it. It's always worked for us.

My granny used to swear by Tiger balm. I think Magnesium sulphate will just draw out water so may or may not help.

I'll pop into the Pharmacy tomorrow to see what I can get hold of. Thanks all.

word of warning - my DD ended up in hospital on IV ABs after a splinter in her foot was incompletely removed. She had a huge black blister and infection tracking up her leg - the infection went from just her toe nearly to her groin overnight - so do keep an eye on the site to make sure its not getting inflamed at all.

Ouch!
We've got 3 of the 4 big splinters out with the help of a revolting "zugsalbe" that smells like bitumen. Weird stuff but seems to draw out the bits.
Hopefully the final splinter will work it's way out tonight.
