Grommets and adenoidectomy for 2.5 DD

My DD is having grommets fitted for glue ear and her adenoids out this week.

I am feeling anxious about the operation and the GA - has anyone had any experience of this in a child so young?

I keep telling myself it's for her own good, but I don't want her to be in any pain after the operation although I guess she is going to feel dreadful?

No experience of my child having this op...but FWIW I had this at age 7 and don't remember any discomfort at all upon waking. Just the fabulous ability to be able to hear for the first time in 6 months

I'm sure your DD will be just fine Smile

She will be a bit groggy after but dosed up on pain relief. She will probably have a sore throat and a bit of bleeding. She should go home later that day where you can continue to give pain relief.

Hi ds had this op when he was 18 months he was a bit groggy when he came round and not very happy when i wasnt there in the recovery room but slept then ate and came home and was playing happlily. He had a bit of pain but calpol etc sorted it out. The only thing I will say to watch out for is loud noises it really scared ds as he hadnt been able to hear and then could, but he soon got used to it.

Thanks for all your messages. The op is tomorrow and I am dreading it.

I am just going to try and focus on the positives. DD has a speech delay because of her glue ear and I cant wait for her to start talking properly.

Ds had grommets when he was 20 months and last month (3.10 years) Both times I think the worst thing for him was waking up and finding himself in a strange room without me.
Made a huge difference to his speech at 20 months, and this time I didn't realise how bad he'd got at hearing until I found things he could hear afterwards!

The first time he got a slight infection in his ears after the operation and needed antibiotics. This time he had slight discomfort (although may be worse for other children as he doesn't usually complain of ear pain, even when his drums burst) but cleared up within a couple of days with a bit of calpol.
Do tell her it may hurt a little when she wakes up as I've come across children whose parents have said that "when you wake up all will be better" and they've been distraught to find they wake up hurting.

For her to watch, if you search "Something Special hospital" there's a clip on the BBC website with Justin with a child having an operation, which helped tell ds what would be happening.
