DC has had a temp thats beeing yo yoing last 24 hours and slightly upset stomach. he's not eaten much at all so i've written it off as a bug and giving calpol to bring down temp and offering water a lot (though he managed a small amount of sandwich earlier and breadsticks).

however since late yesterday he's been complaining of his back being sore. he says "everywhere" but i'm not sure if thats just because he walked into a chair a couple of days ago (and as a result perhaps there's an internal bruise?) or something else?

anyone else's child suffered similar or have any clues as to what it is - he can be a little dramatic at times but this seems a bit more than that this time.
TIA

My back gets sore to the touch when I have a high temp and so do my children's. It's like a hypersensitivity which makes the most gentle touch unpleasant. Perhaps that's what your DS is experiencing.

If there is a temperature, there might well be muscle spasm in the back, so that could be causing it. However, there are so many causes of a sore back, we could be guessing until the cows come home. I'd monitor his temperature, check for rashes, see how he is within himself (i.e. alert vs. glassy eyed), and trust my gut too.

I wouldn't guess to be honest, he could have a UTI, appendicitis or one of many things. Call NHS direct and get him seen by the out of hours GP, that's what they are there for. I hope he's on the mend soon.

Kidney infection?

thanks so much for your replies.
i was up with him once in the night but he slept through until 10am and temp is right down, no back pain and he wanted to eat (he's not eaten in 2 days)!
was going to call NHS Direct this morning but he's loads better.
thanks again.

just to update as the cause was quite different to what we'd thought.
DC went downhill again around lunchtime yesterday and temp went back up.

called NHS direct who got me an appointment at the nearest hopsital with GP.

Turned out to be tonsilitis - huge white spots at back of throat which i would never have seen or looked for as he didn't complain about a sore throat at all. the upset stomach seems to have been a red herring. back pain more than likely symptomatic of general pain caused by the tonsilitis.
thanks again.
