Ranitidine + Domperidone and hunger

Hi all,

10 wo DD (FF due to feeding issues early on) got started on these two treatments for silent reflux on Tuesday, and was fine on Tuesday night, but then last night, woke to feed at 4am. She has been sleeping from 11pm until at least 6am, often later, for over two weeks now, so we're just surprised that she suddenly woke in the night to feed.

Obviously we will feed her and don't really mind, although it does feel a bit of a backwards step. However, I am curious to know whether this might have been caused by the Domperidone, in that if it speeds digestive transit, is this likely to make her hungrier sooner? Has anyone experienced this?

As a follow up, has anyone increased feeds as a result of being on Domperidone? Also, has anyone thought of using hungry baby milk, or is that only to be used if advised by Dr? I absolutely don't mind feeding her in the night, it is just strange as she has been sleeping that long stretch for a while now.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Ta
Dx

Hi there, sorry no advice re domperidome (but at least a bump) we used Gaviscon and ranitidine, the Gaviscon thickened the formula making it less likely to be brought up, but did also cause constipation.

Hopefully someone will come along with some advice for you.

Hi OP,
my DS was given these medications as a baby plus infant gaviscon, i found he would very rarely finish a feed but then be hungry soon after again. I did try him on the formula for hungry babies which helped a bit, although i have since been told that fomula contains some ingrediant than can cause intolerance to lactose? I tried lots of things, smaller feeds more often etc but found havin his milk at room temp an not warm seemed to help. Maybe he just didnt like it warm. My own experience was that before the Dom, he seemed to have stomache ache quite a bit an didnt seem to want to feed, but after the medication kicked in he would feed as often as he liked

Could just be a growth spurt, or, it could be that she's less uncomfortable now and so more inclined to feed. I suppose the domperidone could be moving things through faster, don't think that increased hunger is a documented side-effect of either that or ranitidine but I could be completely wrong.

Re hungry baby milk, TBH I would steer clear, as it's harder to digest. This can cause probs for reflux babies as anything that hangs around in the stomach longer is liable to increase reflux episodes. Just more regular formula would be fine. Could you try offering more in the daytime?

We demand fed DC1 who had reflux from under a week old, but wasn't diagnosed until 9 months - because stupid HV told us that there was nothing wrong with him as he was gaining weight - despite projectile vomiting (apparently I was a neurotic new mum - god did the HV get a bollocking from me and the consultant for being inept). DC1 was put on 2 meds - one of which was ranitidine -other one not gaviscon - can't remember name now. Always demand fed - slept from 10 wks - but when the body needed a bit more did wake for an occasional extra feed.
