conjunctivitis - keep off school?

Should my DN be kept off school? Is 13 and has a mild to moderate case of conjunctivits. My sister said her friend was told to still send in her daughter (who had it last year) by her own GP(!?) but surely it is highly contagious? Supposedly, schools will have different policies on this.... my feeling is that it's not fair on others.... how long does it last? Sister is going to GP to get eyedrops tomorrow...any advice? Thanks.

It is contagious, and I personally wouldn't send her in.
It lasts about 2 weeks iirc

It depends a little on what type of conjunctivits.

Viral (has a watery discharge) absolutely.

Bacterial (gunky) less certain.

Obviously, measures to reduce contagion are a good idea.
Washing hands, separate towels etc.

Bacterial tends to last a week or so.
Viral varies more depending on the type.

Might be worth an optician visit rather than a G.P.s to ensure a diagnosis.

I think she will be sent home if she goes in

Keep her off school until the weeping/gunking stops

My head of dept had it last year, was perfectly well (other than goey eye) but was told by the head she wasn't allowed in school with it. If this is the case for staff then I would assume its the same for pupils. Though as someone Has already said, each school is different.

Many more than I listed by the way but hope your DN recovers quickly.

Thank you. Smile
