Forceps scars on 5 month old

DS had quite a traumatic birth, culminating in failed forceps attempt and then c-section.

He was born with horrible bruises and cuts in the middle of his forehead and the back of his neck as a result of the forceps. The forceps attempt was carried out by a registrar with phone advice from the consultant. In a birth debrief, the consultant told me that the damage had been caused because the registrar thought the baby was in a different position, and so applied the forceps in the wrong place (she has assured me that this is not the registrar's fault, it can be v. difficult to correctly identify the position of the baby - not sure if this is true?)

Anyway, long and short of it is that DS has been left with a scar about the size of an adult thumb on the centre of his forehead, as well as scars on the back of his neck. We saw the GP today, and he said it is unlikely that the scar will heal further now and has referred DS to a plastics consultant.

I know that scarring is only a cosmetic issue, and that we are so fortunate that DS is fit and healthy. I still find it really upsetting though, and was wondering if anyone else has had similar forceps scars problems, and would be happy to share their experiences/advice.

Thanks Smile

Whilst awaiting your referral might be worth trying bio oil, worked wonders on my brothers old scar on his forehead from a fall.

And yes the consultant is right, determining the position of the baby by palpating the anterior and posterior fontanelles in relation to the position of the suture lines is a difficult thing to do, esp if there is swelling the the babys head (caput) if you have been in labor a while. That said, the consultant could have come in and assessed you herself, and not taken the word of a registrar who was concerned enough to ring.

Hope all goes well.
