hi

I am very concerned about my 8 month old DS. recently he had been pooing once every three days and when he does it is extremely traumatic for him. he tends to cry hysterically when it happen and the poos he passes are extremely large and smelly. my fiance actually had to help him by pulling it out today. I'm really worried about him. does anyone have any experience of this? should I take him to the doctor? any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like he is a bit constipated. This happened with DD about the same age, she got really into solid food and really dropped off on the milk. Try offering more fluids, also fruit.

Hi

Does sound like constipation. I can't quite remember when they can have these foods but a staple food for my dd (who suffered from constipation from about 6 weeks old) is a pureed lentil soup. Fry 1 Onion, 2 carrots, 1 potato, then add water, loads of red lentils, stock cube if they're old enough for salt. Cook for 25 mins, add small amount of milk and puree it in liquidiser. It's great for shifting bowel movements and tastes really nice.

I took my DD to the dr many times over this. All they suggested was brown sugar dissolved in water, or pure orange juice.

But cooled, boiled water is also good for babies.

But if it persists, do go to GP.

Try to make sure he drinks plenty, especially when the weather is hot like this - diluted orange or prune juice is good.

You can make prune puree for him too, or give him apricots or oranges.

Does he eat lots of banana? If so try cutting it out as it can constipate them.

Thanks for all your replies! I'll definitely try the lentil soup and prune puree. He doesn't eat very much banana at all becuase we thought it was making him constipated. I just feel so helpless because he cries a lot when he is pooing and there's really nothing I can do to help!

DS2 was like this for months-you always knew when he was going to poo as he would get v fussy & then start screming in pain- it was horrible to see. His poos were massive too; i am not surprised he scremed. We saw the doctors several times. they prescribed various things including a cream that is used for piles for it didn't help. Eventually we were given lactulose which he had to take wvery day for about 2 months. The doctor thought he might have been withholding poo due to haveing had a painful experience & this was making it worse. The lactulose softened things up & by the time he was off it he was fine. I think the reasoning was that if he was witholding due to a previous painful pooing experience this would be forgotten by the time he was off the lactulose & things would correct themselves. It seemed to work anyway...

Prune juice is magic! My 13.5 month old ds still has to have it every few days to keep him regular. At 8 months it was prune purse...applesauce constipates also.

Prunes and custard pureed, works a treat. My 2 still have prunes now with breakfast or with custard for tea, they love them. Also plenty of fluids also helped.

My 3 year old DD has had this problem for about 8 months, she has a varied diet and loves prunes and dates but poos really hurt her and she is in pain sometimes pooing once every 4 days and there has been blood before.

I took her to th dr who listened to her stomach and said he could hear in her intestine that it was very solid, she also gets very bloated.

I have tried lactulose and it does help soften them and eases it.

Hope your DS is better soon it's heartbreaking to watch them in pain.
