Day 5 of vomiting for 11 m/o

I really feel for him. We've all caught the the bug from him but it's been less than 24 hours for us. For 5 days he's thrown up everything, even calpol and is clearly miserable.

Beyond offering lots and lots of cuddle time and water to sip is there anything else? He's sleeping all day, only waking to vomit and has refused food throughout. Thankfully he's been up for water. He's lost weight, he's very small for his age and just looks so miserable.

Aww sounds dreadful, dont know what else to suggest but hope he's feeling better soon

Day 7 :-(

He's lost a pound in weight, back down to 16.5lb. We worked so hard to gain it too.

Actually spoke to HV who turned out to be 'agency' and as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Have you seen a GP? I'd be tempted tbh to establish if there's something outside of a virus causing the bug.

DD had her first gastro bug at 10 months and it lasted 5 days. I was on the verge of going back to the GP at that point but she perked up almost overnight.

Are you giving only water? No dairy for example? Is he hydrated?

MenaZovut · 27/04/2011 18:47

He's dairy allergic so doesn't have it anyway. The only thing he'll agree to is the odd bit of very thin fruit puree, water and the odd oz of Neocate milk.

GP is impossible for appointments with all the bank holidays/Easter/ half days at the moment. It's have to be a wait for hours to be seen as an emergency case, which would distress him I'm sure so trying to avoid. We've all had it, it's pretty vicious. It took me 5 days and I'm still rough, so are the other 2 kids.

Oh dear. We all had norovirus at the same time and my God did I feel ill. It took dh the longest actually but dd was miserable and bringing up everything for days on end.

Normal gastro enteritis should only entail 1-3 days of vomiting, 7 is quite excessive. I would consider the GP, but it could be that your DS has just caught a very virulent bug. Is he still having wet nappies? 6-8 hours or more and no nappies means some degree of dehydration. If any signs of dehydration he needs to be seen.

MenaZovut · 28/04/2011 22:18

Still vomiting but wet nappies. Just seen though HORRIFIC constipation. Couldn't pass it, like a pound coin or more in diameter.

He looks ok, but ratty now.

I feel silly presenting a doctor, expecially an emergency one, with a healthy looking baby yet I worry it's just such a long time.

Hi mena we went though a v similar thing with ds2 a few months ago, he is also tiny (0.4th centile since birth) so I know that this makes it particularly worrying. I went to gp on day 4 and day 7 but she couldn't find anything to make her prescribe anything. At second visit she did say to let him have milk, which he clearly wanted by then, even though he was throwing it all back up. He did get better around day 9 and for some time after had a much better appetite than ever before. His recovery was quite amazing in fact, probably back to normal, if not better weight and eating, within days. Sure your DS will be the same but go back to gp if you are worried, they will def understand your concern.

Thanks, I needed to hear that. I spoke to the pharmacist in Boots who seemed unconcerned as he was hydrated (though he did recommend renetadine, which I no longer have) yet I have the women at work bending my ear about how serious it is.

MY gut feeling is it's a nasty bug, yet I want to check....and check...and check...I'm a bit tired and emotional.

He's just had his (no dairy) milk and it's stayed down, and so is water so it's only food now coming up. Just sad to see him sad, he's sleeping today better which is better.
