Yeast and sugar free diet.. help.. anyone.. please...

I was going to post this in special needs but I have realised I might miss a wider audience and desperately need input..

I have a 10 year old with various complex needs. Long story short, we are trying him on a yeast/sugar free diet to help (hopefully) with hyperactivity and aggression (there is a known link for many kids with complex needs/ADHD/Autism.. and we have a LOT of violence to deal with..)

I have an appointment with the GP on 9 May.. I have emailed his paediatrician also.. and I have emailed BIBIC an organisation we have had previous dealings with who highlighted his yeast overgrowth (candida) some years ago when we previously attempted this, to ask if we can have a repeat of the nutrition assessment/advice..

I have banana acidophilus (children's pro-biotic)on order..

Everything else I am doing from memory with input from my ex, DS's dad who was with me when we had the assessment years ago.

I am hoping to get to see another nutritionist on the NHS because I am not in a position to have another private assessment for him nor would I be entitled to a bursary this time, hence the request for access to previous advice..

Meanwhile we are struggling. DP and I are cooking things from scratch (but he is very fussy and is in shock because he - admittedly - was eating way too much junk until a few days ago - long story but he is a v v challenging/disabled child).

He is having soda bread - which he likes, but only toasted. And we've cut out sugar to the very best of our ability altho he did have a spoon of lower sugar baked beans on his jacket spud this evening..

There is yeast and sugar in so much!! And so much contradictory advice for yeast/sugar free plans online.. we are having to stick with the less strict ones (ie the ones that allow fruit and potatoes for heavens sake!) or we'd be starving him!

Can anyone advise, to get us through until we can see a professional??

I had this book and it was quite good:

It is a very hard diet to do. Good luck.

weaning off either sugar or yeast is bound to be v hard, here we did gluten free and are now carb-lite (eg no cereals), it's like coming off drugs. When my ds was eating wheat, he self-restricted to vegeterian meals only (basically he was unable to digest protein). His taste was affected too, he was either craving carbs or foods that were overly hot/spicy.
Cooking from scratch is the key, so you are on the right track. I also noticed that adding zinc & B vits helps to restore enzymes and taste becomes more subtle. Probiotics also good (we used biokult). Also, quality protein eg cooked breakfast as apparently wheat which some of us don't digest well) only ferments in the gut and feeds the fungal stuff. My ds was briefly on antifungals, but it was zinc that eventually cleared it out. I was like you, v v determined, but as soon as you see small positive changes you get a massive incentive to carry on. Credit to you for getting on with it, I know how hard it is. Also, it can be that it gets worse before it gets better (my ds was covered with fungal infections coming out, it was quite horrid).
At least you know that it's not for ever, my ds doesn't crave sugary or spicy foods anymore and we never even got around scoffing 2 small Easter eggs that he was given as yet.
There is a good youtube lecture by dr Natasha Campbell McBride, that explains how foods and health are linked together (also a book), I just followed approx 80% of it and it has made great difference.
