2 year old spits out antibiotics - help

My 2 year old had a febrile convulsion yesterday - very scary and has antibiotics to take for a throat infection. He needs to take them so his temperature drops and he is less likely to fit.
We have tried all we can think o to get this vile, bitter orange medicine to be swallowed. Held his nose and forced it in, bribes, clear patient explanation, mixing it in any other food or drink we can think of but he smells a rat and won't touch it. He will take calpol and ibuprofen at least . Any ideas?

Try hiding it in a yoghurt, have you tried syringing it into his mouth? i always have the same problem with dd2 (she's now 5 and it takes 3 of us to get it into her).

MirandaGoshawk · 20/04/2011 20:31

Oh golly, I don't have any helpful suggestions but will just say please don't hold his nose & force him, I did that with DD & it's not a nice thing to do to a child, it's a bit like smacking.

I hope someone can suggest something useful.

Try putting it on some sugar.

dycey · 20/04/2011 20:33

Mix with cold from freezer ice cream? Works with my 2 year old

ElBandito · 20/04/2011 20:37

Try giving a little bit on a spoon and then another little bit and then a bit more - with bribes for each one. Wierdly this worked for my DS with anitbiotics. Like your DS he will take other medicine. I think sometimes the volume of a whole dose is a bit much for them.

lostlady · 20/04/2011 20:38

Try firing it into his cheek with a syringe - was recommended to me and worked; hope does for you, all sounds very scarey

galois · 20/04/2011 20:52

I had similar problems with my 3yo, and after trying everything to get him to take his first dose, we gave up. He had a horrible ear infection, was in pain, and had a high temperature, but he'd had bribes, threats, 90m on the naughty step and we could have forced him once, but not 30 times (to do the whole course). We couldn't hide it in juice as he doesn't drink juice.

My 5yo has the horrible orange stuff sometimes and he struggles to swallow it. I think that's a particularly nasty tasting one.

runningmonkey · 20/04/2011 20:56

No suggestions just sympathy as we're currently having the same problem. DD won't even take calpol now either :(

MavisEnderby · 20/04/2011 20:58

Do you have an oral syringe? You can buy them from chemists. You need to squirt it into the mouth kind of against the inner side of the cheek

(only thing that works with sn dd)

Sirzy · 20/04/2011 20:59

Does he have a dummy? If so let him suck the dummy, pull it out just enough to get the syringe in, shoot a bit into his cheek then let him suck his dummy again and repeat until it has all gone!

Its the only thing that works with DS a lot of the time.

oricella · 20/04/2011 23:03

Our DD used to be good with AB's but after being given a different one (horrible orange stuff too) will not take any meds from us any more; strangely enough she does accept them, even the vile stuff, from the nursery staff... it might be worth a try asking someone else not associated with the struggles

Imnotaslimjim · 20/04/2011 23:07

Had same issues with my DD, we tried EVERYTHING including forcing open her mouth Blush we didn't hold her nose though, thats cruel. Didn't matter, nothing worked. Went to my mums, mum pulls it into the syringe and says "DD, take this med for nanny" DD opened her mouth and took it, just like that. Apparently the no nonsense, I know your going to take it approach works! After that we had no problem at all. So maybe find a family member/friend that your DC really likes and get them to try?
