Hypospadias???

Hi
My DS is 10 weeks old and we have just had our first jabs and 8 week check. He has been diagnosed with Hypospadias. I must admit I was a little concerned something wasn't right as whenever he weed it always goes downwards and when all my friends had lots of stories of their sons spraying them when changing nappies etc, mine never has.
Does anyone else have any experience of this and the treatment. I know he'll need an operation at 18months but just wanted reassurance that it is very treatable and will be ok?

It will be fine. My DS had it and had an operation at about 20 months. Was all fine really - no lasting issues either.

He was in theatre about an hour or two and within an hour of waking up was running around the ward asking for lunch! He had to have a catheter and bandaging for a week but even that wasnt that bad. He had loads of pain medications etc and didnt seem that bothered. Healed really well

Do you know where the hole is? Can you see it on the underside of his penis or is it milder than that?

Thanks, thats very reassurring. yes can see hole, it is about 3/4cm below where it should be. GP said it was an 'average' case and not severe.
It is not so much the condition as having a general anesthetic that I worry about.

Can I also ask how long was the hospital stay?

That sounds similar. We decided to circumcise at the same time mainly because he only had 3/4 foreskin - it was like it hadn't formed around the hole. There wasn't really enough skin to stretch back around so we decided on that.

He was absolutely fine with the GA and it really is low risk. Sometimes they put them under just with a mask but they did it through a canula. He had magic cream on his hand and wasnt bothered. I was more affected than he was but it really is one of those things that is worse to worry about than happen. I was strangely ok when the operation was going on.

He stayed one night. He went down to surgery for about 11 ish, was out by 1 ish and back upstairs by 2 ish. Genuinely by 2.30 ish he was running around and eating lunch. We went home at about 10am the next morning. I'm not even really sure we had to stay over night - if the op had been earlier and we had lived closer we may have gone home that evening.

The little ones deal with the GA so much better than the older ones and adults! A little boy who was 8 and there for some other reason was quite sick afterwards but the tiny ones bounced right back!

hi my ds who is now 8 has this, he had his first op when he was 12 weeks old. He has had several since, about 10 more, but he is about as severe as you can get.

It is a worrying time, and u have to admit although i have lived at his bedside at the hospital i had never been with him when they gave him the GA. (that was always my DH job). On the last op feb last year my dh wasn't in the country so i had to go with him and it was absolutely fine, almost a hoot! My ds does it all himself now, as he still uses the gas mask as he has other issues and is terrified of needles and won't tolerate anything on his hands. He is very independent in that little room!

He stays in hospital has varied between 3 days and 10 days post op.

good luck, and i hope everything goes ok for you and your DS.

As peppapighastakenovermylife has explained, hypospadias is often accompanied by a short or malformed foreskin which cannot be made to cover the glans. As some of this foreskin is used to make the repair. the boy usually ends up looking normal but circumcised. Some parents who don't like the idea of this do ask if the surgeon can reconstruct the foreskin. According to what I've learned, this often fails and can complicate the repair, so it is best to accept the surgeons advice.

Yes - higher risk of infection or it needing further work I think. Also the risk is that although they can squeeze enough around it now so to speak, when they grow older and bigger they might well the need to be circumcised then. Much easier now.

Thank you for the replies. We are booked to see a peadeatric surgeon so will see what he says with regards to the severity...

My Son had tha same thing. He is 13 months old now and had the operation about 6 weeks ago at Birmingham children's Hospital. The operation was done as day surgery and he made a quick and speedy recovery. It looks almost healed now, we go for a check up in July I think. Apparantly its very common although before my Son had it I'd never heard of it. Since talking about it I found another parent at work whose 13 year old had the same operation 12 years ago and now doesnt mention it and is fine which is reasuring.

My som wasn't circumsised though
