Infected exzema on Flucloxacillin

My nearly 15 mth old DD has been given this antibiotic to take but i am really struggling to get her to take it without rugby tackling her down. She gets so upset and i feel awful and very stressed afterwards. We haven't managed to give it 4 times a day yet as prescribed and we are losing some of it on the floor in the process. Anyone got any tips?...Can you mix it with food or drink as this is my next step.
Also has anyone got any experience with exzema becoming infected as this is the first time she has had it apart from when she was born and it was nothing as severe as this. Any advice welcome

Did they give you an oral syringe with the antibiotics? This usually helps a lot, you can gently guide it towards the side of their mouth (inside of their cheek) and gently squeeze the medicine out. Don't point it at the back of her throat or squeeze the oral syringe too fast because it may make her cough/choke. The pharmacist should be able to give you one if it didn't come with one, and ask them to mark the correct dose to make it easier. I wouldn't mix it with food or drink without checking with the pharmacist first as it might affect it. Hope that helps

The pharmacist will be able to explain better how to use the syringe when you speak to them

Syringe method followed by tasty drink and a sweetie. The stuff tastes revolting.

Dd2 has had infected eczema. Daily baths with emolient helped to keep her skin relatively bug-free but some children don't respond so well to regular bathing.

Have you actually tried it. It is disgusting. I tried mixing it in food and drink for ds and it just made the food taste vile. In the end gp gave us a different ab. DS didn't have eczema just an infected thumb.

Yes it is horrid. Do it the pointdog way, is the only way to do it and get the syringe as suggested by lala.

It's about the worst age for giving antibiotics as you can't reason with them!

How is the pointy household doing?

pointydog · 19/04/2011 21:00

Faboolarse. Just had a triffic holiday.

foxinsocks · 19/04/2011 21:13

Ah ha. Was wondering about your holiday plans given your sodden holiday oop north last year at some point (or am I remembering incorrectly lol).

I have never had a week's leave - never ever - in this country with good weather until this week Grin. And it's my birthday on Saturday and it is NEVER sunny on my birthday. Is marvellous!

Where you been?

pointydog · 19/04/2011 21:20

The weather is indeed gorgeous. Been to Austria to visit a friend. Sort of out of season but there were just fab things to do. And eat.

foxinsocks · 19/04/2011 21:22

Ooh how lovely. I think those mountainous places far nicer in Spring.

elp34 · 19/04/2011 21:43

Yes i have tried it and no wonder she won't take it, its vile. I did try the syringe method today and not sure if any better really but will try again. Thanks for the tips i will try some of these as exzema is a horrible skin problem.
