Bit of a scare at the opticians today - has anyone got any advice?

Took 10 year old ds for a routine eye test today (everyone in the family is short sighted so we go regularly). When the optician was examining his eyes she said that she was concerned about possible glaucoma and would probably refer him to a specialist. She then checked the pressure in his eyes - which were 15 and 17 - which she said were completely normal. She then took photos and compared them to the photos taken last time and said that there was no need to worry - there were no changes and what she had thought she saw on examination was not actually present in the photos.

SHe said to bring him back as normal next year and there was no need for any further action.

On his prescription she has written "clinical photos done for optic nerve and IOP to compare subsequent visits as large cupping". I didn't notice this until I got home.

I don't want to google unless I need to - I'm hoping there is someone on here who can advise me. Should i ask for a second opinion? Thank you!

I really don't think you need worry, seeker. I know for a fact that opticians take hereditary illnesses such as glaucoma very seriously and certainly wouldn't suggest waiting a year round if they had any kind of thought that it was likely/imminent. All opticians and eye depts in hospitals will keep the photos taken digitally to refer to on the next visit as each person's 'normal' is different to the next person's, and that is just their point of reference next time you take him.
In saying that I fully understand your worry so suggest you ring them tomorrow to just clarify exactly what the terminology means. Hope this has helped a little.

I agree with redwiner, My DH had a similar thing said the last time he went to the opticians and went back to be retested. They don't think there is anything to worry about on the retest but as he hadn't had photos taken before they are still getting him to go back in a few months to recheck. If there was anything to worry about they'd at least want to see him more often.

Hope this helps you stop worrying, although realise its hard!
