plagio fears... reassurance would be great

DS has had a pronounced flat patch on his head since 6 weeks old. He is now nearly 9mo and the patch, while slightly more rounded on one side, is about the size of my whole hand and right across the back of his head - more brachio than plagiocephaly now - It's visible to the naked eye for sure, but I have tried everything re: repositioning etc. Nothing has helped.

I'm getting upset because my MIL, my mum, my DP and others close to us are telling me I am ridiculous, but today, for about the fourth time, another mum has asked me what I'm going to do about it. It's clearly not just in my head. When he has wet hair it looks awful, flattened, with lumps underneath. His cousin (now living in NZ) had a star band for the same condition when he was a baby but still our family are just dismissing my concerns. I've been to the GP to ask for a specialist referral, and the earliest DS can be seen is July - when he will be nearly 12mo.

Has anyone had experience of getting such a late assessment? Or even beginning treatment so late? It's really freaking me out thinking about putting him in a helmet that late, when it may not work, and would probably take much longer to correct. I am already panicking I have left it too late.

Or am I just being a silly worried mama? Is flatness really normal? My GP said he's only really agreeing to the referral to put my mind at ease and he thinks it will correct itself on its own. What if he's wrong? Should I just relax and trust him?

experience of this situation would be very helpful. Wish I could as SIL but she and nephew live in NZ so I can't.

My nephew had this and the problem was sorted out by a cranial osteopath. Think he was a bit younger than your DS but might be worth looking into.

The nhs doesn't treat it, as they see it as a cosmetic issue. You need to contact places that do the helmets for an assessment.one here. Some more should come up through google. DD2 has this, she's 9 months and I've been taking her to a paediatric osteopath for the last two months. Sometimes there are tension areas in the head that need treatment, which sometimes sorts out the flatness. I'm in the middle of seeing if it's making a difference (It has made a subtle difference so far), or whether she may need a helmet. Helmets are most effective up to 14 months, I believe. Don't wait around 3 months for the nhs to tell you he'll grow out of it, the helmet people can give a free assessment.

thanks for the advice. I will contact the people linked... at the end of the day, it's worrying me like mad and even if people think I'm nuts I need to know he's going to be ok. And the NHS just doesn't seem to care!
