I know this has been done before, but don't have time to trawl through 500+ threads on my iPhone.

Bit worried about my little boy, 9 mths. Has had bad chesty cold for a bit, coughing up green and white phlegm, and just completed a week's course of amoxycillin to clear up haemophus influenzae infection in his eyes (successful). He's his usual happy self, but on and off running a temp of 38 and constantly wheezing. Sleeping and eating as normal, though occasionally arching his back and screaming which is not normal for him.

Should I be worried enough to book an emergency appt with the GP?

iPhone crap at spelling...

If he's happy and wheezy it is more likely to be viral - generally kids with pneumonia grunt or seem to work hard with their breathing rather than wheeze, they also tend to be sicker (ie, even when the temperature is down after calpol they will be unwell), however, the only definite way of telling is to either have someone listen to his chest (even then often difficult to tell in babies) or to do a chest x ray, so if you are concerned then see the GP

He's happy and wheezy; problem is that he's always cheery and uncomplaining, so I'm a bit worried (yes, PFB) that he just won't tell me if he's really ill.

breathing being difficult, so pulling in under ribs and around neck. Being sick, temp, tired and sleepy IME

Sirzy · 19/04/2011 06:12

If your worried it will do no harm to get him checked. Like others have said if he is breathing ok and generally happy chances are it isn't but will do no harm to get him checked over

JacksSnoryStory · 19/04/2011 06:22

I would take him to the GP and get him checked. My ds had pneumonia at 12mths (mild luckily but still necessitated an overnight stay in hospital and intravenous antibiotics). Apart from very high temps (40)and not eating much he was his normal self. The temps were the thing, we just couldn't get them down even with calpol and neurofen (as advised by the A&E Dr who mis-read his xray and came rushing over to us when we came back to A&E 24 hrs later saying 'oh I'd hoped you wouldn't come back, my registrar checked the xray...' Hmm - sorry, off the point a bit but even now I'm Angry - they should have rung us!

Iggly · 19/04/2011 06:40

I'd take him in TBH! I've done this with my pfb DS- wasn't anything sinister but he did have a crackle on his chest so gave him an inhaler which cleared it up after a week of coughing and failed antibiotics.

Jack, thats outrageous! I would complain although they make it hard to do so.

Well DSiL gave birth this morning to a baby girl, Penelope April Rose, so I'm fortunately going to be hanging around Chelsea and Westminster hospital all day should anything get worse. But he seems a bit better today anyway.

Thanks for all your advice - helped me to calm down a bit

Probably too late now - but I wouldn't take a feverish baby to a maternity unit unless you are 100% certain that he is not contagious (i.e. he does not have flu, really bad cold or similar). I hope he gets better soon

beanlet · 19/04/2011 15:20

Dont let children in at C&W anyway - but as it happens, DSiL still in observation unit so leaving it til Friday. Baby currently chortling. He's clearly fine. And I feel dumb...

I love that stupid feeling you get when they dramatically recover as soon as you get to OOH or convince yourself they are really really I'll. So glad he is on the mend Smile

acebaby · 19/04/2011 18:17

Meant ill obviously

ednurse · 19/04/2011 18:19

If he's using his accessory muscles then he needs to be seen asap. If not, it's likely viral.
