Not Walking properly after broken leg HELP!!!

Hi,

My 2 1/2 yr old dd broke her right leg a month ago (greenstick fracture). Pot came off last Fri, but has started walking with either foot to side (at 3 o clock position) or limping badly and on her tip toes. When pot came off the consultant told me that the previous consultant should of put a full cast on not just upto her knee and it might of healed in a twisted position!!! We have to wait 2 weeks until we get a new appointment. I am livid that the initial consultant may have f*ed up her leg, all for the sake of putting the pot a bit further up her leg.

But my mum thinks she's just got used to holding her leg like that and she'l realise in time that she can walk properly again.

I dont know anyone else who's child is as clumsy as mine and has broken a leg to ask.

Can anyone advise me, please as im worried to bits.

Thanks. XXX

Not the same but ds twisted his ankle at about 18 months. He couldn't weight bear for a couple of days and when he started to walk again it was similar to how you describe. We ended up at A & E and fracture clinic with x-rays etc. But then he suddenly seemed to remember how to walk again and has had no problems since.
Once he managed to walk with his foot flat on the ground again, he realised it no longer hurt and within 24 hours was charging round as per usual.

DS1 (5.8) broke his leg a couple of months ago (spiral fracture). He had a cast on for 4 weeks. After he had the cast off, he walked just as you described for about a fortnight, gradually getting better. He is now back to normal (except for a slight limp when running fast at the end of the day. We reminded him to put his foot down straight (don't know if this would work with a 2yo though!)

I hope the consultant appointment goes well. Do post again with an update

Thanks. I dont think that the leg has twisted. My gut instinct is that she's got used to walking this way. I just dont know how to pursuade her to try to put her foot down properly. We've tried games and making a plank for her to walk on like a ballerina, toes forward - foot down which works a little bit. But goes back to tip toes straight after ARRRRRH. Also she says that it still hurts - but she likes to be carried about still so I think she may be having me on!

Fingers crossed.

Her leg might still be sore as she hasn't used the muscles for a while.

2-3 weeks after pot removed and is walking fine. Only sticks her foot out a bit when running or really tired.

Thrilled to bits. Just thought id post in case any1 else worried about same thing!!
Thanks.

great news! It's amazing how brilliantly children heal

Thanks so much for posting this.

My daughter broke her fibula just over 3 weeks ago. She was only in pot 20 days when they x-rayyed it again and said they were happy to take the pot off. That was on Wed and since then she's been reluctant to walk on it and when she stands and moves around her foot is turned out like you'd described. I was convincing myself that she was never going to walk properly again until I read your message. Hopefully she just needs time to get used to having her pot off.

Thanks again. Great to hear your daughter is fully recovered now.
