Hi. My DS has been vomiting since 2 o'clock this morning. He is still being sick now and can't even keep water down. He's slept all day with the exception of a few minutes awake here and there when I've managed to get him to breastfeed.

There's been no wet nappy all day and his little rounded belly seems to have disappeared overnight. I can see his ribs and he's normally really well padded like his mum! He feels like he has a temperature but typically can't find the effing thermometer!

At present he is sitting watching Waybaloo - v. lethargic and sunken eyed. I realise 16 hours isn't too long in the scheme of things but the dry nappies are worrying me a bit. At what point do you think I should start getting really panicky concerned? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would phone NHS direct straight away

Seriously, sounds like dehydration and you still don't know the cause. Phone RIGHT NOW

You need to go to A&E if no wet nappies in 12 hours and no fluids in. Esp. if lethargic. He probably needs some rehydration therapy. It's probably nothing to worry about but just a horrible virus but he needs hydrating pronto. Good luck.

Try using a neurofen syringe or similar to get a few mililitres of water into his cheek as well, that can help.

Found the thermometer - 37.9 so not extremely high. Am awaiting call back from NHS direct. Will give him another BF now and if that comes back up, off to A & E. Thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

Just an update. Discharged from hospital last night after ds2 (20 months) been rehydrated by nasal-gastric tube for 4 days.

Ds1 (4 yrs) was assessed for 2 days after becoming poorly on Monday. He has also been discharged but still has temp and lethargic.

When I got home I found three replies on answerphone from NHS direct FOURTEEN HOURS after my original call.

So really just posting this to say thanks to those who replied to my OP (I'd have probably dithered about in a panic for several more vital hours!) and also, if in doubt, A&E!!!!! Smile

Oh well I'm so glad you went - that must have been extremely scary for you. I'm glad they are all getting there - expect them to be exhausted for up to a month if they've been through a major viral illness. Did they get tested for swine flu?

Never ever wait for NHS Direct if you think it might be serious, they are just bloody useless IME.

Wishing you all a speedy recovery (and hoping you don't get it too!)

Glad your all home now, hope you all feel better soon

Thanks Sirzy and, WMMC, no they didn't test for swine flu. I'm hoping not to get it too, being 17 weeks pg, could do without it! and yes, I will be a little more wary of NHS direct from now on. You live and learn!
