Banged head - WWYD? QUICK PSE

DD (7) just fell off the sofa larking about and smacked her head on the rocking horse. Large lump came up immediately - she's sobbing - NHS Direct says I can care at home but should I go to A&E? Am usually quite decisive but just don't know. Help!

DS did this the other day, cold compress and made hime sit quietly for 10 mins, he didn't knock himself out nor was he sick, keep her quiet for a while, and keep an eye on her, the fact that is cam up quickly is good I think.

An instant bump & crying is a good sign..
I would stay at home & keep an eye on her.

The fact that she's sobbing sounds good, believe it or not. Where's the lump? Frozen peas or similar in a teatowel and keep an eye is what I'd generally do. If she starts getting drowsy or feeling sick then get her checked out.

good that bump is coming up also that she is awake and alert. I would apply a cool compress and keep her home personally. If she is sick or lethargic bring her in

She's calmed down now, sitting with her frozen Boo Boo Buddy on her head sipping some water. Seems okay for now, but will watch her for 48 hours as per NHS Direct advice.

TBH A&E would say no different from NHS direct. They wouldnt do a brain scan or anything, and would look at general behaviour, history (no loss of consciousness) mechanism of injury, and give advice.

woah this can't be the first time she's had a bang on her head surely?

For future reference - if there's a lump - good sign, if there's crying and wailing - good sign

if there's unconsciousness, nausea, spaciness (any one of the aforementioned) then get her checked

otherwise treat like a bump on the knee (only no icepacks) - cold compress and hugs

and calm yourself down a little, you'll give yourself a hernia Grin

A lump on the outside is very good news - if there's no lump then sometimes it can mean that it's on the inside instead IYSWIM, and there's swelling or bleeding in the head.

If she's crying, she's not being sick, and she wasn't knocked out then it doesn't need a hospital trip, just give her lots of ice and cuddles. If it's really hurting then perhaps some Calpol.

If she vomits, goes limp and unresponsive or has unco-ordinated movements, take her in.
