DD has caught chicken pox off DS aged 3 and she's so miserable. She doesn't have a particularly high temperature but is clearly very itchy and difficult to comfort. Calamine lotion and lots of feeding is pretty much it.

When DS first got the spots and I took him to the GP, it was suggested that if she got it, he might give her some sort of anti-viral medication. When I took her to the GP on Tuesday, he had changed his mind about this. Should she have been given something?

I'm probably just being a bit new baby / over protective, but I feel very uneasy probably just because she's so young. DS had a fairly mild dose but she seems to be worse. She's got a couple of spots on her upper eyelids (towards the corners of her eyes) and one on her cheek which is quite big and sore-looking. Most of the spots (although not all) seem to be concentrated on her head and neck.

Should I take her back to the GP or am I worrying too much?

DD2 got it off DD1 when she was 5 months - miserable, hot & itchy & loads of spots in her hair & face - we found that calamine, calpol & nurofen helped. I think you'd find that it's too late to give her any antiviral meds that would have any effect & she's too old for any antibody type medicine too. A friend recommended putting porridge oats in the bath & that really seemed to help both of them - you cut off the leg of an old pair of tights, put a couple of tablespoons of oats in them, tie a knot & put it in the bath water, swirling it round & squeezing it to make the water cloudy. Did seem to soothe them & help the dry skin on my hands too. Hope she's better soon.

I'll try the oats thing. Thanks for that.

I'm back to see the GP todayavout the spots on her eyes because they're starting to look a bit gunky. Oh joy!

DD had it at 15 weeks, she was fine afterwards, btw. Mostly around her eyes (they were awful) and groin. We never talked to a GP about it.

Hi DS2 had chicken pox when he was 3 weeks old (caught it off DS1) and was covered head to toe and poorly.

We were given Acyclovir anti viral medicine and he recovered very quickly.

GP has given her antibiotics and eye drops because her eyes are gunky and he thinks one of the spots on her face might be infected. Other than that he thinks she's coping pretty well. Poor DD!! Thanks for your help everyone.
