Hi.

My dd has swallowed a 2p coin. I have spoken to a nurse at the local clinic who says to just keep an eye on her. Is this sound advice or should i take her to A&E for an X Ray?

It will be really difficult getting to the A&E as i dont drive and its 45mins away!! But if i have too i will call a taxi.

Many many thanks in advance.

Not a medic or experienced in this matter!

If you know she swallowed it then I'm not sure what an X-ray would do. You need to check her nappies to see if it comes out because if it doesn't come out then you will need to take her to hospital.

My DD swallowed a hair clip once (we thought) and NHS Direct said take her to A&E.

Is she Ok or is the coin stuck (coughing, gagging, chocking on food...)?
If the coin as passed, it will show up at the other end in a few days. Check nappies/potties.... and if you don't see it then you can get a trip for a Xray.

Old advice for my BD was wait and see. I think it is still sound providing it went through properly.

Hi,

My DD did this about 18 months ago (although her's was a 5p) i took her to A&E on the advice of a nurse and all they did was put a metal detector over her stomach to see where it was (they don't do an x-ray they said to me)
Once they located it they said it was past her diaphram so it was on it's way through - they sent her home and told us to keep an eye on her.
I was glad i took her just for my peace of mind but I am lucky in that I can drive and the A&E isn't that far.
Do you have a partner or realtive that could take you - even later on if your DD seems to be OK at the minute??

Good point re the X Ray. She definitely swallowed it. I suppose my main concern is where is it in her body and are coins poisonous? 2p is quite a big coin for an 11 month old.

Stickyproblem what happened when you went to A&E with DD?

She has eaten and drunk ok since. She has coughed a couple of times but is perky.

My friend's daughter just did this, she is almost 2. All the A&E doctor did was check her throat to make sure she had actually swallowed it, and told her to check her dd's stools for the next few days.

If she keeps coughing, go and get her checked out. Otherwise, I'd just wait for nature to take its course.

arsenicandoldlace · 12/04/2011 15:42

Thankyou for your help! Ideally i would like to take her to get checked out but that that?s quite difficult, so going to just wait and see and let nature take its course.

My DD did this when she was about 4 . Unfortunately she managed to get her coin wedged in her windpipe so had to have it surgically removed . (not as grim as it sounds , involved a general anaesthetic and a pair of long handled forceps !)

We knew hers was jammed as she was coughing , but not choking , and drooling a fair bit .

Lesson learned , and she has never lain flat on her back and shaken her piggy bank over her head again !

I would take her to be checked tbh. Some things can cause damage when they're passing through. You could perhaps call NHS 24.
