dd with thrush - any remedies that work?

gottasmile · 11/04/2011 15:27

My dd (soon turning 3) has thrush and has been using an anti fungal prescribed by the GP since last Tuesday. It's just not getting better, if anything worse. Today I thought there was something from her nose on her leg but when I looked closely it was oozing out of her vagina. (Looked just like yellow snot - sorry for TMI)!!!

Does anyone know if she should avoid any foods or eat certain foods?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I swear by zinc supplements, the antifungals are unlikely to work long term (speaking from experience).
Also, probiotics.

Thank you nightcat, that's interesting. Can children take zinc supplements (that you know of)?

She hasn't wanted yoghurt for a couple of weeks and I just found out that she shouldn't have blue cheese (which she loves)....

Yeah, nothing fermented and in theory no sugar if you can, capsule probiotics better than yoghourt
Zinc often deficient but rarely tested for, my ds was older when he had fungal probs, but I am sure it's OK, just ask chemist about the dose.
Ab/s and antifungal lower immunity, so whilst antifungal will kill off the fungus in the lab, in a human if immune system is low, the infection will come back.

Read up on zinc in connection with fungal infections, also on zinc foods, I think it's in red meat and egg yolks.

My DD is having a problem with thrush at the moment. She has had it on and off for months now. It first appears in her nappy and develops into a terrible rash. Canastan and Timodine will treat it eventually and she will be good for a few weeks and then it will come back.

She has it again at the moment. I am giving her dactarin oral gel for her mouth and using canasten duo for her nappy. It is not too bad at the moment so hopefully i have caught it in time before it turns really bad. Have also started her on Boot baby probiotics. At this point it cant hurt.

I looked for a baby specific zinc supplement in the chemist but couldnt find one. None of the multivitamins seem to have it in it either. Will try increasing her read meat and egg consumption. I will try anything if it might stop another full blown attack.

Thank you so much for the wonderful advice. I'm going to go to Boots today to get some probiotics and hopefully zinc. (I'll see if they have something for her age.) But going down the food route makes a lot of sense. I asked the gp if there were any foods to avoid or eat and she said no......

Your advice has been invaluable. Thank you nightcat and thesugarplumfairy.

I just thought I'd add that I got some multi vitamins (which has zinc in them) for dd this morning. Boots didn't have probiotics for children, so I think I'll stick with the yoghurt for now.

Now I'll see if she improves...... really hope so, it must be so uncomfortable for her.

neither are cheap, but we do what we have to do Wink

Excellent site Thesugarplumfairy!!! Thanks so much for the links. I think dd is getting slightly better but it hasn't gone away.
I hope you're able to give some relief to your dd. This is the first time my dd has suffered with this, and I'm hoping it won't be recurring like it's been with your poor dd.

I looked up my nutritional ref books and other food things you could also try are:

olive oil - just use in foods/cooking/salads
garlic
coconut-derived foods/drinks
vit B/esp biotin - which is also in red meat

But zinc is just awesome.

gottasmile · 15/04/2011 08:37

Thanks nightcat,

The olive oil and garlic are always in our diet, I'll try the coconut (I'm desperate now, as she's STILL complaining and still so red).

Vitamin B and zinc are in the multi vitamin I got from Boots. She's only been taking it for a couple of days, so I imagine it will take a little while to work.

Thanks for your continuing advice, it's very much appreciated.

Have you tried putting plain, live yoghurt directly on to her vagina? Sounds crazy but it's quite effective and very soothing.

noddyholder · 15/04/2011 08:46

A couple of drops of tea tree in the bath is also good

gottasmile · 16/04/2011 17:28

I've tried the tea tree oil (thanks noddyholder) and I think it's helped.

I'll try the yoghurt too (don't know how she'll like it!) - thanks ramblingrosa!!

She's not complaining as much, and not as red, so finally something must be working.

Thanks again everyone!
