Chickenpox or eczema?

Hi!

Just wanted some other mum's opinions really...

My little boy is 15 months old and has had a fever for the past three nights. He's had real trouble sleeping and keeps on waking himself up in inconsolable tears. Really unlike him as he normally settles straight back down with a dummy and a cuddle.

He's had very mild eczema before but has over the past few days come out with a bad rash (with some blisters) over his legs and arms - not over his tummy and back though.

Took him to the doctors this morning and have been told that it isn't chickenpox but is just a bad case of eczema so was prescribed a hydrocortisone.

I'm really doubting that it is eczema (having had very bad eczema all throughout my own childhood) and am hesitant to start applying a strong steroid cream when I'm not 100% sure. Also, I'm not sure what could be causing his sleepless nights and fever if it is eczema.

Wondered what other mum's opinion is of this? He's due to go to his childminders for a couple of days at the end of this week and I obviously don't want him going if he's contagious.

Can chickenpox start anywhere and not just on the tummy and back?

Any help or opinion would be very much appreciated!!

Samm x

Chickenpox is quite distinctive, the spots start as raised blisters. I don't want to worry you but my friend was in this very situation a month ago with her DS, at first doc said start of Chickenpox then when she went back because said he was still itching but no classic spots, doc said excema, she wasn't satisfied, went back again (3rd time's a charm) and it turned out to be scabies. Her DS (and rest of family) were treated with a cream and all are fine.

I first noticed both kids had Chickenpox by feeling the blisters on their heads when stroking their hair.

if the eczema is infected then that can cause blister type spots and a temperature. It will need treating with antibiotics. I'd go back to another gp if possible
