How long until we get some relief.

Sad Trimethoprim takes between 24 and 48 hours to start working, so she should start feeling a little better tonight hopefully.

piratecat · 08/04/2011 08:23

ethelina, thankyou. so we hope that by morning there should be improvement.

she so wanted to do these last 2 days of term. was doing well with the lack of viruses, (has been off school alot with lots of different things). It's non uniform day today too, and always fun. she misses out on so much.

They sent her sample off. If it comes back clear i don't understand what this is tbh.

Fingers crossed then for the antibiotics. I've known samples be clear on dipstick and show nasties on the lab test. It'll also say what antibiotic will work and what won't so font be surprised if they say she needs to change it.

The sample result should be back by tomorrow so chase the surgery for them.

Sounds like she needs time off to pick up generally.

piratecat · 08/04/2011 08:54

ethelina, are you a doc or nurse?

if so i might trail you round the boards lol!!

unfortunately the surgery doesn't open on sats, so we have to wait till Monday for any results.

why don't they show up on the dip thing? doc was umming and arghing over whether to treat at all but given it was a weekend coming he decided to try.

Ha! No sorry, not doc or nurse. Lowly hca only with some personal experience in childhood with uti.

Dipstick shows whether you have protein, glucose, leucocytes in your urine which are markers for certain things but they don't show specific infections, that's what the lab test does.

ethelina · 08/04/2011 09:24

Forgot weekend, am on mat leave Grin

You could chase today but result unlikely to be ready yet, they have to grow cultures to see what comes up and that takes a while.

Sounds like cystitis to me, which is very common. Get her to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice can help to ease the pain. And make sure she wears cotton underwear only (not synthetic fabrics).

piratecat · 08/04/2011 09:45

yes, am making sure sure she is drinking lots, she is a water addict anyway, which helps, has never drunk anything else.

Always wears cotton, we don't have anything soapy in the bath either. Am wondering if the pull ups at night have caused a bacterial build up?

My DS, who's 3, gets a rash on his bottom with pull-ups, so I think they are more sweaty than nappies. Can she not just have a pad on her mattress? Not sure how healthy it is - particularly for a girl - to be sweaty 'down there' as it could easily cause yeast infections.

piratecat · 08/04/2011 10:14

we did have a bed mat, but i found she was just getting the wee everywhere, and lying in it.

I am thinking, at her age, with growing up, that i need to be more fastidious about hygiene, as she is deffo getting more natural discharge. I obviously don't wish to overdo it, ie let the body clean itself, but she might need showering there more.

no rashes, or thrush at the moment.

Is she showering every day? I'd say that now the weather is warmer it's probably a good idea - particularly as a) she's got this infection and b) she's wetting herself at night.

piratecat · 08/04/2011 11:06

it is everyday, but i missed a day last week, and she was particulary wet one night.

i have just showered her well, we cupped water and sliced it down as the shower even from 3 foot distance was too harsh. i just applied some canestan too, which doc suggested yesterday, but thought it wasn't prob thrush.

She was crying her eyes out, but we managed to have look and i explained what the parts were. She didn't realised she had inner labia, as i suppose most little girls don't. So now she can describe where the pain is better. When she was saying inside, i thought she meat in her urethra, but she means there and on the urethra opening.

Poor little girl! It does sound like cystitis, which with treatment should clear up in a day or two. She can take paracetamol too, if that helps to ease the pain.

piratecat · 09/04/2011 10:03

update, the burning is no more this morning!!

will finish the course, of course. thanks all x
