MY 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS PROTEIN AND BLOOD IN HER URINE

I am getting increasingly worried about my 8 year old daughter. Approx 4 weeks ago, she woke up with a slight sore throat and a rash/bruise suddenly appeared on the side of her hand. I took her to the doctor and he did a routine urine check. It said there was 1+ protein and 3+++ blood in her urine. She didn't have a temeperature and her blood pressure was normal. All the blood tests they carried out were clear. The scan also showed nothing. They sent her home and I have had to carry out dipstick urine tests 3 times a week. She was prescribed penicillin and the rash/bruise completely disappeared after 2 days.

I didn't do one first thing this morning after her first "wee" of the day, but early evening today, my daughter wanted me to do a test. The results were 3+++ protein and 3+++ blood! I am so scared now. Looking on the internet has just confused me as some say it's nothing to worry about but other sites seem to suggest it's very serious.

Does anybody have any knowledge or experience of this please? Thank you.

Go back to the gp!!! Seems a bit odd that they wanted to you to dip her wee 3 times a wk tbh......

Apparently it's quite normal that they get parents to carry out those dipstick tests, I am getting used to doing them now. She has a follow up appointment in June, but that's too far away and I am not prepared to let it go on that long.

I did take her back to my GP 2 weeks ago and he said he would see her after Easter. The results at that appointment was 1+ protein and 3+++ blood. But with 3+++ protein today, it's obviously getting worse not better. :(

I think it can just mean a urine infection. Definitely go back and see GP taking a morning wee specimen with you. It may just be that she needs another antibiotic. Hopefully somebody who knows more will be along in a minute.

Dispticks are notoriously inaccurate. The protein concentration (number of +s) will vary with how concentrated her wee is. I agree that you should go back to your GP - WTF's the point in getting you to dip the urine if nobody looks at the results for 2 months?! - but don't panic, it can mean a variety of things and chances are if your daughter is well in herself it's nothing too sinister :)

yes agree they need to send an msu off to the lab to see what exactly is going on, doesn't sound right, go back to gp.

Does she have other symptoms? Pain? Constant weeing? temp?

Does the urine dipstick show nitrites ,if it is positive then she has infection. If it is negative then she is looking the proteins and blood through her kidneys. This can be transient after a viral infection ( chest infection) or persistent . If it is persistent then she needs to be referred to a pediatric nephrologist.

It looks like that they are watching the microscopic haematuria and proteinuria( looking blood and proteins) to settle down. I dont think you need to panic if her scan and blood results are normal.

I would go straight back. I have experience of renal problems and wouldn't leave it tbh Better to be safe and get her some more antibiotics if necessary.

Thanks for your replies. My daughter has complained in the past of tummy pains, but has never complained of pains when going to the toilet or anything. She is very active. Her urination frequency is normal I would say.

Just take her back to be safe. I had a condition which if I had had a short course of steroids as a child would never have progressed as it did when I was older. I always encourage parents to take children back and keep an eye on it.Continual leaking of protein often causes swelling in teh ankles eyes and in my case tummy. If she has had scans though I would be reassured in many ways but just worth checking x

Thank you. She just had the one scan which was an ultrasound scan. Not sure how accurate or how much they show. I will retest in the morning as soon as she wakes up. Fingers crossed it'll have gone down.

You could ask your GP why they are watching and is it possible to refer to a specialist.

The scan will show if there is any obstructions but not very specific and there are other special scans available and again it will be organised only by a specialist. Don't panic _ if you have any doubts go back to the GP.

Unfortunately we've had a very rough time of it, well my daughter has more than we have. We took her to the hospital and she was kept in for a few days, her blood and protein levels in her urine both stayed at 3+++ and her blood pressure was sky high. She is now on blood pressure tablets and she's only 8 years old. They let her go home but had to return last Thursday for a kidney biopsy. That was the scariest day of my life watching my daughter go through all that. We have to wait 6 weeks for an outpatients appointment to find out the results. We are so scared. We don't know what we are facing.

I just received an appointment letter today to get results/treatment for my daughter. The admin person has handwritten a note at the bottom saying all appointments full til then. The appointment is 22 AUGUST 2011!!!! OMG I am livid, angry, upset, outraged!!!! How can they expect my daughter to wait almost 4 months for results???? Today is Saturday so I can't even phone them and they don't go back to work til Tuesday. I am left getting angry about it til at least Tuesday. Doesn't the stupid admin person realise this is an appointment to get kidney biopsy results and start treatment? This isn't an appointment to see how she's doing, it's for results!!!! Sorry but I just can't calm down about this.

Just seen this. I have kidney disease that was diagnosed with a biopsy, and the consultant phoned me personally the day after my biopsy with the results. I think it's awful that you have to wait until August for the results - the only reason I can think of for this is that the biopsy result doesn't need urgent treatment. Is the BP medication actually for high blood pressure? I'm on BP tabs not because my BP is high but because they help reduce the levels of protein in the urine, so she may be on them for that rather than high BP. However, high BP is linked with kidney disease, so the BP tabs can have a dual effect.

Did you manage to get her appointment brought forward when you rang the hospital?

Forgot to say that my very first symptom was a mysterious rash all over my legs and a sore wrist joint. I then developed severe swelling in my feet, ankles and legs - does she have any swelling at all?
