Can muscular pain really take 6 weeks to go in a child?

DD has been in constant pain for weeks now. Had various diagnosis but none proven. Urine sample fine. Temperature up slightly, blood pressure and blood sugars fine. She is now on 3 lots of medication and the GP thinks she could have hurt herself without realising.

We have been to the GP 6 times. The latest one said he thought it was muscular and it can take 6 weeks to go to have to wait. Pins and needles in her hands.

Go back and mention the pins and needles, numbness, pain and blurred vision. It's likely that she'll be referred to a neurologist, this is nothing to worry about, they are just experts on the nervous system. The pins and needles/numbness indicate that this is where the problem is, could be the muscles irritating the nerves but it should be thoroughly checked. Demand a referal if he's reluctant, no child should have to put up with this.

She had an MRI last Sunday for a previous problem. Still waiting on the results.

Which part did they scan?

FAB5 · 08/04/2011 20:21

Her head.

She had been having headaches all the time. Eyes fine. Diagnosed with sinisitis and given AB's. Helped but not completely cleared up so hence the MRI.

Ahh, I see now. You've probably already put this down somewhere, sorry. When did she have the scan? Do you have a GP appointment for the results?

FAB5 · 08/04/2011 20:46

She had the MRI on Mother's Day and have to wait another 1-2 weeks for an appointment at the hospital to discuss the results.

Who is she seeing at the hospital??

FAB5 · 08/04/2011 20:54

I am assuming a neurologist as that is who ordered the MRI.

She has just come down again saying she can't sleep. I have said I can't make her sleep but if she doesn't sleep soon she isn't going to Nanny's. I said she should turn the light off as that might help so she has. I just wish she had let me do it 1 1/2 hours ago.

Ah, OK. Wait for the appointment. Is the neurologist aware of the pins & needles/numbness?

She doesn't need the light on, I usually leave the bathroom light on when ds goes to bed though so he can see if he needs the loo.

FAB5 · 08/04/2011 21:00

No, as the appointment to book the mri was ages ago and she hadn't had the pain then. DD has always needed/wanted the light on but if we turn it off she does puts it back on so we left it on as normally she goes to sleep at a reasonable time.

You need the results though. Your GP can call and ask the hospital for them. She doesn't need the light on, it's keeping her awake.

I know but she is scared of the dark. I will call the GP on Monday if we don't go to A & E before then. Thanks for getting me through the evening.

So here we have another week and I had to go and get DD from my in-laws at 8.20 last night as she was crying to come home. She felt dizzy and still does this morning, still has the pain in her side and her arm is hurting too.

The last GP we saw was on Thursday and he was sure it was muscular and to give nurofen for a week and see how she was. I am concerned about all these painkillers she is taking but also worried sick at what is wrong. I just want a diagnosis whatever it is.

DH will take her to the chiropractor on Thursday and if she doesn't feel any different we will stop and maybe try the osteopath.

Feel so rubbish I can't make her better and pain free Sad.

DD said she felt looser after the chiropractor appointment but dh isn't convinced and wants to cancel. My child has constant side pain for weeks now and I still don't know what to do.

Did you get the MRI result yet?

FAB5 · 12/04/2011 20:01

No. I was asked if I had an appointment to discuss the results and when I said no I was told to give it 2-3 weeks and then ring if I hadn't heard anything. 2 weeks will be Sunday.
