13 mo with size 2 feet - is that really small?

We've just realised that our ds seem to be a lot smaller than he should. He hasn't been weighed or measured since he was 8 months so we don't know where he sits on the chart curves. He was on the 50th centile back then. I'm taking him to the GP tomorrow for a check.

It never even crossed my mind that he was short (he's quite chubby) until he was standing next to a cousin who's 6 weeks younger and taller than him... He may well still be within the 'normal' size but me and dh are fairly tall and dd was always on the 75th centile for height and was wearing size 4 shoes at the same age so we just expected him to be tall as well, iyswim.... It's like his body is normal size (he wears bodysuits for the right age) but his legs are too short Sad...

Should I be worried? Is it normal to be that much smaller than a sibling? Could he just be growing at slower rate and will catch up later? Or could there be a serious problem?

I wouldn't worry about it. Ds is 17 months and in size 4 shoes. He still fits confortably into 9-12 and some 6-9 clothes. Some children are just smaller than others.

If you are worried go and have him weight and measured. Sounds fine though (to me anyway) My DD2 is now 20mo and she has diddy feet, one foot is a 2.5 and the other is a 3 haha. I was worried until we saw a pead (for unrelated problems) and he was happy with her weight and height. She is very short but chubby round her waist. She is in 12-18 mo clothes and I still have to roll the legs up and the sleves up on her clothes.

OTOH, my DD1 was in a size 4 pair of shoes at 8 mo when she started walking, she has very long and thin feet and looooong big toes.

Oh and both of mine followed the approx 50th centile on the charts. Although DD2 is ever so slightly under it right now.

Thanks everyone!

Hopefully will get reassurance from GP as well tomorrow!

Don't worry. My son is enormous (well on 91st percentile), my daughter is between 9th and 25th. She's wearing size 5.5 shoes at 2.5, whereas he was wearing this size at 1.5 Smile. She is similarly dinky in weight and height.

LaCerbiatta · 08/04/2011 12:25

Well GP thinks his height is absolutely normal even though he went from between the 25th and 50th centile down to just above the 9th...

He's still in the same centile for weight, which means he's even chubbier now! Grin

Great news! It's odd when you have one "big" kid and one "small" kid isn't it?! They have growth spurts so maybe he'll shoot up at some point.

DD was the same with both weight and height actually- she was born on 75th percentile but is now somewhere between 25 and 50 for height and between 9 and 25 for weight.

LaCerbiatta · 08/04/2011 15:12

Thanks Tgger. It is odd! But according to MIL dh was also very small as a baby and with very small feet (which he still has) but he did catch up in the end and is quite tall now. Maybe it's just genetics!

Some kids just have small feet i worried also as my 3 girls have quite small feet dd 7 is size 10 dd 5 is a size 7 and dd nearly 3 is a size 4 1/2 sure your ds is just fine.

CoffeeGoneColdAgain · 14/04/2011 10:40

DNephew was 2 in january and is only just going in to a size 5! He's all in proportion :)

lljkk · 14/04/2011 10:54

DS had about the same size feet at that age.
He is now 11, very average height and foot size.

dd was size 3 at 16 months.
