Severe chicken pox and very high temp with a 7month old. Tips please!

My DS is just under 7 months old and has a very severe case of chicken pox. They appeared on mothers day and then my daughter had spots appear too. She's 5 and is coping brilliantly. My DS on the other hand seems to be very uncomftable and is having real problems sleeping and settling generally. I've been told about bicarb of soda baths with tea tree oil in, this helps a little bit, anything else I can do to ease the symptoms??

What is very high temp?

Northernlurker · 07/04/2011 08:18

You're best to go and ask in a pharmacy really what they recommend for babies. There are quit a lot of things that will help but I'm not sure if they are all ok for under ones - piriton for example.

How high is the temp? Does it respond to paracetamol for a bit? If it's not going down at all for even a short time I think you should ring your GP. DON'T just turn up there though - your child is highly infectious and needs to keep away from immunosuppressed folks.

Good Luck - it's miserable but hopefully will only happen once.

chart here on fever in children.

Does the fever come down when you give him painkillers? Poor little mite.

Dd2 had severe chickenpox at 6 months catching it from her sister. Dd1 had just over 50 spots. Dd2 we gave up counting at about 300. She had so many spots they sort of fused together.
Having said that she came through with several scars but nothing worse.

My DD who is 6 months had terrible chickenpox last month. I found the virasoothe (advertised next to these threads) to be really effective at stopping the itching and stopping her thrashing about.

I also alternated nurofen and calpol every three hours to bring the fever down.

It was a hellish week and she looked awful! I feel your pain.

How is your DS this evening, Brill?

Brillbryant · 07/04/2011 21:52

He's went to sleep at about 7 and has just woken up again. He's not a brilliant sleeper anyway so not really unusual. His temp is under control and I think he's generally feeling slightly more like himself. We managed a chuckles earlier. I had him out in the sunshine with his nappy off earlier at my beach hut so a bit of sea air and sunshine has done us all the world of good. Fingers crossed we're through the worst!!

I'm afraid to say at the worst of the pox dh and I took turns driving 5mo dd2 around at night to get her to sleep. Cost a fecking fortune in petrol! We had anti histamines from the dr too.

Northernlurker · 07/04/2011 22:19

Sounds like he's over the worst. Get medical advice though if the temp becomes unmanageable.

I never noticed teeth till they were very obvious. Poor lamb - hope he has a better weekend! Smile

Oh, poor wee soul. No wonder he has been grumpy.

I had a broken wrist when I had chicken pox. In a cast. It was itchy. [understatement]

Brillbryant · 09/04/2011 23:51

Thanks everyone, we seem to be over the worst!
