Rash under arm in 3 year old?

About 2 months ago, DD got some sort of viral bug (very high temperatures for a few days, followed by chesty cough and upset stomach). Around the same time that the temperature broke she developed a bright red rash under one arm. As I was about 10 weeks pregnant at the time I panicked thinking it was chicken pox or something like that, and called the doctor.

Doctor's comment: definitely not CP (phew), obviously she had a virus. He then took another look at the rash and said "well, that's a mystery, isn't it". Yes, very reassuring.

It took about a week for the angry redness to fade, but it's still there (if very faint). Then on Saturday evening when DH was giving her her bath, he noticed that it was bright red again. She doesn't show any signs of being sick at the moment, and it was a hot day, so I thought it was maybe a heat rash. It faded overnight, but was back again yesterday evening.

Considering the doc's last contribution on the subject, I'm not encouraged that I'd get any answers if I brought her back, although I will if I'm very concerned.

There's no sign of any other rashes elsewhere.

Any ideas? Or do I really need to brave the non-commital doctor again (we've had similar issues with him before, I'm not hugely confident in him tbh)

Does she have a sore throat?

vvviola · 05/04/2011 14:49

I don't think so. She's not complaining of one, at least, and when I asked her on Saturday if anything hurt (thinking that maybe she was coming down with something viral again) she said no.

She likes to complain if something is sore (she might have picked that up from me, I'm a dreadful patient! Blush ) so I think she would have told me if she did.

It could be a heat rash/viral rash/eczema? More likely to be a heat rash though. Nothing in between her fingers?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 05/04/2011 14:51

With it being only under one arm and fading overnight I would suspect that it is temperature related.

vvviola · 05/04/2011 14:55

Nope, nothing in between her fingers (we were painting yesterday, I had to spend quite a long time scrubbing her hands, so I got a good look!)

Heat was my instinct, but considering it's there all the time (although very faded) and just comes up redder/angrier looking occasionally, I wondered if I might be missing something obvious.

(and with me being pregnant, her at pre-school with a pregnant teacher and the two of us getting on a plane in 2 days I'd hate to think it was something contagious that I'd missed...)

It could be eczema. Is it itchy?

I have to go, I'm a secret superhero and I'm needed to save the planet. Wink

Mulluscum?

vvviola · 05/04/2011 21:52

Thanks for all the suggestions (and special thanks to belledechocchipcookie for taking time out from saving the planet Wink )

I did a quick google of molluscum and I don't think that's it - DD's rash is flat against the skin, not raised.

It's faded even more this evening, which could point to a heat related thing? Originally caused by the high temperature and then re-started at the weekend when the weather was so hot (12 degree difference between Fri and Sat, so kind of took us by surprise!).

I asked her was it itchy, but seeing as me going near it causes giggles (well, I am touching under her arm, and to her that's the start of tickles Grin ) I didn't get too much sense out of her.

I think I'll keep an eye on it, and if I'm not happy in a week or two, I'll take her back to the non-commital GP.

Thanks!

It's all in a days service. Wink

My son gets spots under his arms, there's more then a few pores under there and they get a little blocked sometimes. They tend to clear up themselves.

I'd have a look at google images and see if you can spot something that's similar (no pun intended).
