Would really like to know if anyone else has ecperienced this. Confused
My 11 month old DS was diagnosed with tonsillitis about 6 weeks ago, with the normal symptoms, plus he was bringing up everything he ate or drank, as his throat was so sore.
Doc prescribed antibiotics, which cleared it up within a week or so. Since then he has had a persistent cough, and sounds phlegmy when drinking milk or sometimes just when playing. He is very active! He just gags, and can't seem to control it any more, which means EVERYTHING comes back up.. (it's like that scene from the exorcist round here...)

the phlegm and gag reflex issue has made him sick every other day or often more frequently, and I took him back to the doctor as I was concerned about him not getting enough food, and the persistent cough. Most nights he wakes up hungry as he has brought up at least one meal, so needs milk to get him through the night.

The doc said his lungs were clear, he has no temp, and although his throat was slightly red there was no infection.

I have just got to the point where I am constantly on edge wondering if the next mouthful will make him choke, cough, and then be sick.Sad
I'm trying very hard to cope with PND, PTSD and a wonderful but exhausting little man but I feel like all I do is worry about sick!
Him being sick, trying to give him a drink of water to stop him being sick, clearing up sick and washing sicky clothes, carpets etc.

Sorry for the moan, just really need some advice and so Sad and frustrated for him and me.

Thanks in advance! Smile

I can offer you sympathy, my ds nearly 6 still vomits when he has a cough, he did it tonight, I have no idea what to do, apparently keeping off the milk should help, no cough medicines seem to helping Sad

Dairy after an illness can for some ( not all so this might not be the case) irritate their tummies and make them vomit and/or have explosive poos.

You could try to avoid dairy as much as you can for a week. Is he breast fed/ formula or cows? If breast feeding you could cut out dairy in your diet and his? If cows milk you could water the milk down a little bit for a few days if he insists on having it.

Dairy seems to aggravate mucus.

What's the Dr saying?

Sorry I can't give much hope - DD used to have a very sensitive gag reflex - she would often gag on her dinner and then bring back everything she'd just eaten. It was ALWAYS worse when she had a cold and cough. However, as she has got bigger it's improved. She's now 23 months and I can't remember the last time she was sick without a stomach bug (IYSWIM?). So I guess I'm trying to say, it will get better but maybe not immediately.

Having said that, milk is a known food to increase mucus production so perhaps cut out/down on the milk for a few days and see if that helps. If that doesn't help then I think it's a case of trying softer foods, etc for a while just to let his oesophagus calm down.

She just said to feed him little and often, and that his throat was a litlle red. Oh, and to do steam before bed to hel the cough. Thing is, it's not just milk that aggravates it it's whatever he is eating, if he chokes.
He is on formula, but only morning and night and has solids all through the day.

Did the dr check for reflux? The constant backflow of stomach acid can make a throat very raw

Hope you get to the bottom of it very soon, my nephew was an incredibly sicky baby and it was a horrid time for me sister

dontjumpplease · 04/04/2011 20:25

oh I give up, I have been on maternity leave so long I have forgotten how to spell. Never mind, not the point really.

My ds only has milk at breakfast and bedtime too but his cough is always better if we avoid that for a few days.

Pancakeflipper · 04/04/2011 20:26

I would cut back on dairy and feed really mushy/ pureed foods. My DS2 used to gag on any lump. I thought he'd be on mushy food when 18. He's 2 now and is fine now. Try to not worry. Which is very easy to say. But it will stop.

dontjumpplease · 04/04/2011 20:27

She didn't check for reflux, that was something I wondered about. He never suffered from it before the tonsillitis. I breastfed him for 6 1/2 months and then went on to formula.
