Does anyone have a child with scarred kidneys?

After my daughter has been in constant pain for more than 2 weeks, having seen a doctor 4 times, had an x-ray and 2 potential diagnosis I took her to A & E and the doctor there thinks she might have had an untreated UTI and her kidneys might be scarred. I have googled and it says she will need her blood pressure checked for life but I don't understand why or know what will happen to her kidney.

I am taking her to the GP on Thursday to have her checked as she has tonsillitis as well and also to ask for a referral with a paediatrician.

My friend's daughter had recurrent utis from toddlehood and they thought her kidneys might be scarred. Basically she was under a paediatrician and had yearly DMSA scans which check for growth etc of kidneys and she was discharged at about 10 or 11. She was on prophylactic Trimethoprim (antibiotic) for a while to stop any more UTIs in their tracks. She's 16 now and completely fine.

Thank you. I was imaging all sorts.

Why it has to always be my dd with problems I don't know. Ironically ds1 had to be born by an emergency section and has barely been ill since.

only a very small percentage of those with recurrent UTIs get kidney scarring. dd1 had the dmsa scan to check her kidneys after lots of UTIs and they are fine.

I don't know if this is helpful but I had undiagnosed utis since around 2. When I was around 16-17, I started to get really bad kidney infections. This went on for 4-5 years, until I saw a brilliant urologist who basically said my kidney was so scarred it wasn't working and the best course of action was to have it removed. This was 13 years ago, and I am in v good health! It is great that the doctor has caught your dd's uti. Just don't let them fob you off in the future. I take cranberry supplements to ward off any utis and I haven't had an infection since. I don't know if you can get them for children. Hope your dd is feeling better.

That's the thing. DD doesn't have a UTI. The hospital doctor asked if she had ever had one as a small child that wasn't treated as that could be the cause of the pain. She is still in constant pain Sad.

I think your GP will ask for her to have a kidney scan and refer her to paeds, they can see her with the results and go from there. Ring and talk to your gp today, they can get the ball rolling straight away if necessary.

Usually the earlier they investigate, the less likely there is to be trouble further down the line.

CharlotteBronteSaurus is right about only the small percentage have scarring, more often its a case of watch and wait.

I have an appointment booked for DD for later in the week when her sample results should be back. I have a letter from the hospital doctor with his diagnosis and recommendations but I have found in the past that Doctors don't like following someone elses instructions.
I just want dd to be pain free.

My DD's bf now 13, was 4 when she was diagnosed with kidney reflux and it turned out one kidney was no longer working and the other was only working at 70%. She was on antibiotics for quite a long time and has had a couple of operations to repair the reflux but she seems to be fine now.

That is good to hear, bruffin.
