How do I know if my DD is dehydrated? Been vomiting since middle Fri night every 1 - 2 hrs. last vomited at 8.30am today. only had 1 wet nappy (which was the one she had on last night). She has spent the whole of today snoozing on the couch. She is sipping water in frequently.

Look for a dry mouth and lips, lethargy, sunken eyes and lack of responsiveness. You could try rehydration salts, available from any pharmacy. Or lemonade with sugar tipped in it to take the fizz out.

Thanks. Her mouth & lips are dry. Have managed to get her to drink a small amount (1/4 cup) water by using a tea spoon.

Our DS also very ill Fri night to Sun morning and became dehydrated with high temperature. We ended up at A&e and they advised that you can give 2 year old kids diaralyte (spelling?) to help re-hydrate. Hope your DD is feeling better by now.

How is she feeling now Hollian? :)

She is on the mend.
We got dioralyte from Dr on Monday. Dr advised we had to get fluids in her or it was a trip to A&E. She wouldn't take dioralyte at all. I managed to get her to take small amounts of water and some milk yesterday. It has been a struggle.
She still won't eat solids. Going to try that again tomorrow.
The worst thing was seeing her so lethargic.

waterbabyabroad: how is your DS now? Feeling better?

At this age solids are the very last thing they want. Let her drink whatever she fancies, and I mean anything, coke, juice, milk whatever. My DC had terrible D&V a couple of years ago. They lost weight, were listless and spent the whole week just in nappies, and I wrapped them and me in towels. By the end DS hadn't really eaten for a week. But had drunk loads of fluids, even though he kept chucking them up and worse. Then my washer packed up. I can honestly say it was the worst week of my life! When DS started to feel better he asked for MacDs. We went 2 days running. I really just didn't care what he ate as long as he ate! Sounds like you're doing really well. Little and often is the key.

my dd is hypoglycaemic and they told me in the hospital that the best way to rehydrate a vomiting baby and bring their blood sugar back up is to give them pure concentrated apple juice as it has loads of sugar in it but isn't fizzy.
and I've got to admit it has worked a treat many times with my sickly dd.

Hollian · 05/04/2011 20:14

Thanks for all the advice.
I'm at the stage that if she asks for something, I'll try her with it. She's had a little apple juice and a little smoothie, both seemed to give her energy for a short time.
She asked for Skips before bedtime! I said we had run out - will see if she asks again tomorrow.

Thanks for asking. DS is on the mend. He has unfortunately caught a cold and has a sore throat now so he is only just starting to eat tiny amounts (since Friday night - I never thought I'd see the day as he loves his food). I gave him Dioralyte using a syringe which he couldn't get enough of at first but refused it by the time we got home from the hospital. Ice cream has been the most successful food to get in him so far...
