When is a pass still a problem?

DS2 did not react to any noise at all when he was born. We took him for a newborn hearing test which he did pass. The next time we went privately when he was about 2 as I still thought there was an issue with his hearing. With the first test one hear took longer to pass and then at the private appointment he was passed as being at the lower end of normal. He then had a perforated ear drum when he was 4. When he was 5 he failed the school hearing test which was redone and was passed but I think he was responding to the tester. It is being tested again soon but I am wondering what we can do to help him as it appears there is something of an issue. He doesn't always appear to hear and also talks very loud as if he can't hear himself.

DD aged 4 has failed her first hearing test at school, we're waiting for the second test. She talks loudly, keeps saying "what" and when reading, she can't hear the difference between "the" and "a". She passed the new-born hearing test in one ear, but found it difficult to get a reading in the other, they said she was gunked up! At school, she sits closely to her teacher, I speak a bit louder to her at home than I do my other DDs. It is obviously affecting her reading, she's a bit behind at literacy because of this. I am like you, don't know what to do, she's had numerous ear infections and a perforated ear drum. I don't know what to suggest, but just to let you know that you are not alone.

Thank you. I hope your dd improves soon. At the private test we were told nothing could be done.

I think something should be done. I would ask for a referral to an ENT specialist. There must be something that can be done, children can't hear for no reason. I am waiting for her second test, the school nurse said that she will refer her to an audiologist if she fails her second test.

Yesterday ds1 (age 3) had his 2nd set of grommets. He's been under ENT for over 2 years with ear infections. He sufferes with glue ear which effects his hearing, and this winter alone he's had 5-6 perforated ear drums since his first set of grommets came out in the autumn.
At ENT the hearing tests he's coming out as just below normal hearing, but you have to have a child that cooperates to do them, when they first tried he was too young really.
I'd get referred to ENT.
