Can anyone tell me what this might be?

My DS who is 2.4m has got some raised white/yellow spots all along one side and the tip of his tongue. He is not in any pain, ate his dinner as normal, drank well. He has been at the CM today and had a pretty normal day although he is very tired and had a disturbed sleep last night.

No fever, no other symptoms, apart from being a tired grump he is OK.

The spots are very distinct, and seperate, doesn't look like thrush.

Anyone got any ideas?
TIA

hand foot and mouth? Sound horrific I know but actually really common in children of that age. Does he go to nursery?

breadandhoney · 28/03/2011 20:16

thrush was my first thought. i am now out of ideas. if it was me i'd call doctor-on-call and ask about it tonight. if it is anything that needs to be seen urgently they'll be able to tell you to go to a and e. otherwise, go to doc in morning.

thanks for your responses, it doesn't look like HFMD either. the spots are very small, raised and white/yellow in colour. No red at all, and only on one section of his tongue, looks a wee bit like a cluster of ulcers, but smaller spots, like white heads.

Might call NHS direct, he is asleep now and like I say he is not bothered by them.

It is a worry though...should I take him to A&E? Just so weird looking.

My DS has had HFM twice and the spots have been different both times. I don't think you need to take him to A&E as he is fine other than the spots. You know what kids are like they get a temperature the first sign of anything worrying. Just get a doc app first thing.

breadandhoney · 28/03/2011 21:42

it costs nothing to call nhs direct and get advice. wouldn't rush to a and e but give them a call to put ur mind at ease.

Hope you get it sorted in the morning and he feels better soon...Let us know whet the G.P says it is. :)

Morning, so DS slept fine, had a look in his mouth and the spots have gone down a bit, spoke to a lovely nurse from NHS direct and she suggested I take him to the pharmacy to get looked at. Did that, the pharmacist says he has some very tiny little ulcers perhaps from some slaty food. He had his first taste of cheese and onion crisps yesterday [boak], so could have been those.

He says his tongue does not hurt and is OK, he refused marmite on crumpet this morning, said it was too spicey!

I am pretty happy with what the Pharmacist said, so will leave the GPs for now, and hopefully they will go away completely by tonight.

Thanks for your kind words.

Yes my DS has had those,he does complain that his tongue hurts sometimes but I just put it down to ulcers.
He had some white spots on his lips the other day, they worried me a little. But they seem to have cleared up now.
Try some Anbesol if they get uncomfortable

longislandicetea · 29/03/2011 11:23

Great pleased to hear that he is fine :)

breadandhoney · 29/03/2011 19:11

Glad it was nothing serious. Hope it clears up soon. :)
