Hi, my son is 4 weeks tomorrow and for the last few days he has a really bad cough. I tool him to the gp and she listened to his chest and said it sounded fine. She prescribed some nasal drops to make it easier for him to feed as he has.been a b
it bunged up aswell. However the cough is what's really worrying me, he looks so scared and in pain when it starts.

Is there amything i can do? He is exclusively.breast fed, is there anything i could eat that might help? Any advice would be appreciated, it breaks my heart everytime he starts coughing.

Take him back to doctor if you are still concerned. Trust your instincts. Keep him close to you as well.

Does he have fever? I would keep him with you as much as possible. I found that it helps to let dc sleep in your arms with head quite high (very tiring for you I know). Also, if you keep being worried take him to A&E. Don't rely on doctors listening to childs chest, 9 out of 10 would not notice if there was anything wrong even if there is as it is extremely difficult. Only clear way to establish whether there is chest infection is through chest X-ray. Hope he feels better soon.

hi, i really sympathise. we've just been through this only my daughter is a few weeks older. in our case it turned out to be a horrible thing called bronchiolitis. i'd never even heard of it. i took her to the GP initially, who checked her very thoroughly and wasn't too concerned. however a few days later she had got a lot worse, not better, and i was quite scared. i went with my instincts and took her to A+E. i am really glad i did, because within half an hour of our arrival she was seen by two paediatricians who gave us the diagnosis and some reassurance. please take your son to a+e if you are at all frightened. there's nothing much they can do for bronchiolitis, but it's good to get a diagnosis. the tipping point for me was when she was vomiting up her feeds because of the coughing, and was looking terribly pale and red puffy eyes. it did clear up by itself but it was good to know what it was, and they were able to measure whether she was getting enough oxygen.

Like PP said if you are worried dont hesitate to go to A and E.

If he struggles to feed, or is "sucking in" under his chest when he breathes then go straight to A and E.

Otherwise, lifting the head of the cot/moses basket should help the cough when sleeping.
