Recurrent chest infections in DD2.

DD2 (almost 20 months old) cannot seem to catch a break WRT infections, mainly chest and ear. She has had no less that 3 chest infections and 2 ear infections this year. Also a bout of horrid tonsillitis at the same time as one of her ear infections, which took almost 3 weeks and several courses of strong anti b's and ear anti biotic ear drops to clear it all up.

We had had DD2 at the doctors again this week (second time argghhhhh), she has yet another chest infection (making it the third this year)

At the beginning of this month she was due to go under a general at our local hospital for some investigations for axenfeld syndrome and glaucoma and various other things as DD wont allow the HCP's to check her while awake. The investigations were cancelled due to her being on anti b's for the tonsillitis and ear infection. It has been rescheduled for the beginning of April.

I guess what I am asking is is it normal for an almost 20mo to have so many chest/ear infections etc. It has been 3 chest and 2 ear infection this year, last year it was several more. So much so that I have lost count I would say though upwards of 5.

We saw a pead in late 2009 early 2010 as she seemed to always be ill with coughs and infections and she said nothing to worry about.

Do anyone else's otherwise healthy children have this amount of infections. We have a pead appointment on Monday and I need to know what to ask her. I feel bad for DD2 she never moans or cries when she must be feeling like crap.

I was going to ask the same as my 25onth old is unwell every 2 weeks at the moment - scarlet fever, chest infection, balinitis and 3 fever virus things since Xmas. It's such hard work!

Not quite so bad as your experience but worse than any of his peers that I know.

It's horrid isn't it dycey, I hate it when the LO's are poorly and there is next to nothing we can do for them.
DD2 is so good with it (she is like DH doesn't get all whiny, I on the other hand get man flu lol)

DD2 has her pead appointment today so I am going to speak to her and see what she say's. I was speaking to my mum last night and she said I was the same as a child, apparently I was born with a low white blood cell count, wonder if this could be the same with DD2.

DD1 got DH's genes luckily and is very rarely ill.

I feel so helpless for DD2 though and I worry about the amount of anti b's she has had in her young life so far.

I hope you LO gets better and stays well xx

It's awful! Mine has just had 4th lot of antibiotics - today for eat infection. And I mean 4 th since Xmas. Sure this can't be right. Will you let us know what the paediatric says?

menazovut · 28/03/2011 21:06

My son is 10 months and has had 5, possibly 6 if they were separate, chest infections. I'm hoping it was just a rut as he's been ok for 1.5 months now. I too have been told it's nothing to worry about.

dycey · 29/03/2011 09:24

Menazovut - mine was ill a lot around 7,8,9 months and got infection after infection. He had a fairly clear run between one and nearly two and now back to back illness again.

Knackeredmother · 30/03/2011 05:39

Ds 16 months had upwards of 10 courses of antibiotics, I've lost count. Going to end up in more tonight/ tomorrow as he has another chest infection now. He also has recurrent oral thrush which is a sign of a deficient immune system. However as he is developing well no one wants to investigate.
Let us know what your paediatric doc says

MenaZovut · 30/03/2011 20:22

Mine has persistent thrush too, though we finally appear to have kicked it.

Sirzy · 30/03/2011 20:29

Hope it all clears up soon and she gets to have the test (and of course I hope they go well)

DS is 16 months and is finally on a chest infection free run (not had any since January) which I think is down to getting his asthma meds sorted as they always came with colds which set his chest off.
