and I'm so sorry to parents of children that have been through major operations that Im here rambling about this because he is only having grommets fitted but I have really bad anxiety about my kids (maybe this should be in MH?) and I'm absolutly terrified at the thought of him going under a GA.

I haven't even thought about it properly, even now I'm not because I might have a panic attack - thats how it feels :(

Think that totally normal to feel panicked (so no need for mh) When is the date for?

its the 2nd April, and assesment tomorrow.

comes at shite time as it was supposed to be august and by then I would have been back on my medication (am pregnant so had to stop) so may have been calmer then!

My son is due to have a tonsillectomy with GA next week and I feel just like you. I'm terrified. One consideration that comforts me is that the pediatric anaesthetist will be in the operating theatre throughout the operation. But I'm still very frightened and worried. Sorry I can't offer any help -- other than to say you're not alone in your concerns. Good luck!

My ds had grommets at 20 months and I hadn't prepared myself for how emotional it was to see him under ga being wheeled off for the op. The nurses were very supportive for me, and offered to stay with me.
It's a short op, and when they fetched me they said no hurry as he was only just coming out. As I walked down the hall I heard him start screaming, so I knew he had come round fine. Smile

It's normal to feel so worried, When my DS had a very minor operation I hardly slept for a week before hand and not at all the night before. Like you it was the anasthetic that worried me, not the actual op! The trouble is we've all heard the occasional horror story that hits the news that it's easy to forget that every day hundreds (thousands?) of these ops go perfectly and patient is discharged shortly after. I think it's worse for the parents than the kids - my DS went home an hour after the op and was back to normal by the next day, while I aged about 20 years in one afternoon!

Take loads of pictures and keep the wristbands. Pictures on the trolley etc

When they go to school and do a topic like people who help it always comes up who has had an operation. My son and daughter at different schools both loved telling the tale although they were really too young to remember except by photos

My DD had hers done when she was eight. I think for me it was much easier because I am a nurse and have been at the inductions of hundreds of children.
Try not to allow your anxiety to show. Easier said than done I know.
Also, be positive, your DCs health will change for the better.
