Manuka honey, anyone else used it for stomach ulcer or similar?

Dp is waiting to get the camera down as he's had stomach problems for a while. I'd heard manuka honey was good for treating this so did a google and found some good articles on it.

We went and bought some from Holland and Barrett's. Dp was shocked at the price but I already knew it was expensive Wink Anyway, he's been taking it for a few days and it's working already! It said it'd take a couple of months to work?
I just wondered if anyone else has used it? Found this article that's useful for anyone who hasn't heard of manuka. honey article

I think that website is optimistic about Manuka and stomach ulcers.

Even Molan and the center for honey research haven't got round to testing it on people yet.

It works in test tubes but no-one knows what happens when it ingested.

Will the compounds which have an effect stay around?
Will they stay around long enough to get an effect?
And in what quantities will be required to get a therapeutic dose?

We're a long way from knowing these things about Manuka Honey.

I've heard it's tasty though.

Honey has great healing properties. It is widely used in the Middle East for putting on wounds as well as being eaten daily as a general daily oral antibiotic.

Thanks for replying. A friend of mine was prescribed it in this country for external leg ulcers.

just realised I put this in children's health? Not sure how that happened?

Found another article showing the NHS use it here.

There is good evidence, from Molan and others, that honey is a good, but not great, antimicrobial for external use.

It also has a good evidence base for certain types of burns.

But we do not have similar evidence for internal use.
And certainly not for stomach ulcers.

Thanks DB. Dp is having the camera on 7th April, hopefully eating the honey will help to heal him somewhat? He certainly feels better and doesn't have the burning or feeling of a big stone in his stomach. His abdomen feels soft now, whereas it was hard before he started on manuka. One thing it certainly won't be causing him any harm Smile

"One thing it certainly won't be causing him any harm"

If only because this has been put in the Children's Health thread, honey should not be given to children under the age of one due to the increased risk of botulism poisoning.

But I know this is not an issue for your DP.

I find it fabulous for things like colds and sore throats etc, it really does help. As for stomach ulcers I have no experience. It is used in the NHS for leg sores/ulcers, I know that.

Holland and Barratt is rip off prices...you can get 2 jars in cost co for £11.50.

Yes I know about the under one rule thanks Grin

Well he's still pain and bloating free today. Been doing as recommended and having a teaspoon on a little piece of bread before eating. Even if it keeps him pain free until he gets his tests done then that's a bonus.

Are the ones in Costco UMF rated Manuka? Do you need to have a membership card for there? Asda have it for £8ish but it isn't UMF.

Yeah UMF 10 rating and yeah you need a membership card unfortunately. Hope your DP is well again soon.

I get 15+ in Tesco for £8.75 ish I think. It was on 3 for 2 a few months ago - I stocked up :)

Curiousmama · 23/03/2011 09:40

Thanks CB doesn't look like we have one round here?
Cheers bubbley, didn't realise they sold it there? The ones we got from H&B were buy one get one for a penny so worked out under £8 but that'll change. It's delicious isn't it? Smile
