11 month olds Coldsores wont clear up

Hi i am wondering if anyone out there can help me? My 11 month old son had an outbreak of stomatitis herpes at 4months old and since then has had recurrent coldsores developing in clusters around his mouth and only in the past 6 weeks developed 2 coldsores ( at different times) on his bottom lip. Each time 1 cluster seems to clear up (which usually takes about a week) within a couple of days i notice another area starting to develop. Thankfully he has never had any inside his mouth. Ive used various creams prescribed by my Gp and he had a course recently of aciclivor tablets dissolved. After this course they cleared up for only about 4 days and came back and he has never been clear since ( about 4 weeks now ) I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem as i am aware that this is uncommen in young children?? My Gp seems unconcerned

Hi there josjo, don't know if it's common or not, sorry, but application of a lip balm containing lysine regularly between bouts of outbreaks might help break the cycle. Good luck :)

Is he bottle fed, if so how hot is his milk?
My friend has frequesnt coldsores that are triggered by the heat, the sun or hot drinks are the worst offenders!

I am a life long cold sore sufferer and I would say that you need to see a dermatologist or allergy specialist or similar and your GP needs to give you a referral. If the meds are helping that's great, but the instances of recurrence are extremely high. Poor little soul.

I agree that sometimes a hot drink or cold drink can trigger in childhood. Or simply the strain of sucking and the pressure of a bottle could do it - but I don't see how you can avoid that one. I really hope you find some help that sorts it out and gives you a break too.

Thanks everyone for your advice. He is bottle fed and im also being conscious at the mo bout his spoonfeeds being to warm and giving them cool i am a regular microwave user but have just stopped using that in case has anything to do with it

They're miserable but usually settle - I think if they're that severe and not settling even with acylovir would take back to gp - wonder about checking immunity - does he get every other bug going or otherwise ok??

josjo · 23/03/2011 22:51

he never got anything for the 1st 6months and has had 2 colds 2ear inf and 2 viral inf in the past four months so he is def going through a rough patch. hes very happy and healthy otherwise a gr8 eater also. Will mention to the gp about immunity might be worth a try - thanks
