Anything to reduce chickenpox scars?

DD1 had CP very badly a month ago and has been left with some crater type scars on her face. Anyone got any advice on anything that may help reduce these?

bio oil maybe? I had loads as a child but they faded really well

How about something with Vit E in it? I used Vit E body lotion on my C-section scars both times and it worked brilliantly.

My DD is in the same position so I sympathise a lot. Hers were so bad we took her to dermatologist and his advice was to keep the skin as moisturised as possible using something like Cetreban or Epaderm as a soap i.e. rub all over in the bath but then wash off afterwards.

I asked about Vitamin E and he said no evidence it works but wouldn't do any harm. It does seem to be commonly recommended whenever you do research about scarring and I do still occasionally use it if I think they are looking worse.

Another lady on here has previously recommended rosehip oil - and that does seem to have at least one study that shows some improvement on scarring.

One other thing that I have been looking into lately but haven't decided whether to go for it or not is silicone sheets - but this is because my DD has large numbers of raised cp scars on her body- not sure it would work on the crater type ones.

BTW - the other thing he said is that it could take upto 12 months for the redness to fade but that the craters would gradually "flatten" and go a silvery /white colour over the next few years so they won't look as deep or prominent in the long run, if that helps at all.

The other bits of advice I have picked up whilst researching this are: try not to expose the scars to excessive cold or too much sun and that massaging them can increase blood flow to area and maybe help promote healing.

Thank you Bonobo. I'll try some of that - need to be careful what I put on them because the worse ones are a cluster across the bridge of her nose and quite close to her eyes - but will look definitely look into rosehip oil. The ones on the rest of her body seem to be fine - think they'll take a long time to fade but they are smooth. Couldn't believe how deep CP spots could be! DD2 had it two weeks previously and all hers went without leaving a single mark - two weeks after they'd scabbed you'd never know she'd had it. 6 weeks after DD1's and you can still see where every single spot was. She's going to think I'm a bit strange for rubbing her nose a lot but if massaging works I'll be giving it ago - she'll thank me when she's a teenager Grin
