Urgent advice please dd has been bleeding in her tummy

DD 13 months has an unknown blood vessel disorder and is on asprin and nifedipine. Wednesday night she was inconsolable for around an hour, then when she had her poo Thursday morning half of it was blood, took her to gp who sent her to hospital. They thought either a result from thye asprin or a small vessel bleed, hopefully a one off, she was sent home.

Yesterday she had another poo and half of it was blood again back to hospital who said the same (no mention of scans or anything though), she was sent home. We are going to see a paediactric gastroentologist at 11am any advice on what I should be asking for ie scans or demanding!!!

I am just really concerned that the blood vessel condition (that has been so far in her limbs they go black as vessels close for no reason) is spreading internally.

I think I would be inclined to stand your ground and insist on a scan and some sort of treatment plan. If it was me I would want to know what exactly they are going to do about it and when, otherwise IME you can easily get pushed from pillar to post with no real treatment.

Good luck and stand firm!

Bloody hell, do make sure something is done.
Good luck and very best wishes.

I would really love them to scan but my local hospital is a bit rubbish if telling the truth. I think they will just send her straight back home :(

She has a consultant at Newcastle but he is away at the minute

Aspirin can be a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding too. Its great that you are able to see a paediatric gastroenterologist so quickly.

mummytopebs · 19/03/2011 09:09

Do you know how long it would bleed for with Asprin? She is happy in herself, but then again she always is and they are querying wether she feels much pain as she is not bothered when she falls etc. And since xmas she has had 2 ear infections, a chest infection, conjunctivitis and a urine infection (which she is also waiting scans for) and she has not been bothered by any of these illness's even when her temp was plus 40.

She has been off her food a little bit

Even though your consultant is away, they would have registrars surely.
don't give up too readily (easy for me to say I know)

Just an update x I take it back the gastroentrologist was fantastic, ordered an urgent scan and got someone from Newcastle to come and do it for her. Luckily no twists in bowel or masses. They think it has either been a bleed from the asprin or a blood vessel due to her condition. Anyway discharged for now as has had a poo with no blood in it, given open access if she has another bloody stool

I'm really pleased about that, it must be a huge weight off your mind.

Thanks for reporting back and take care.

Phew Pebs :)

How's the rest of the diagnosis/tests going?

mummytopebs · 20/03/2011 22:20

No diagnosis yet :(

We are going to Newcastle for an Mri angigraphy in a few weeks to check blood vessels in the whole of her body, also more bloods to be taken.

She is also waiting for kidney scans from local hospital as she has had 2 urine infections

Poor kid. Glad the blood incident seems to be resolving itself and still fingers crossed for a diagnosis for the medical issues of your daughter.

mummytopebs · 20/03/2011 22:35

Thanks. She has been sent home on some medication to stop the bleed if it is from asprin so fingers crossed the bleed has stopped for good
