Possible UTI in 3 year old DD - advice please!

Have just had a lightbulb moment.

DD (3) has been ill since Tuesday - vomiting, high temperature, abdominal pain, screaming that her bottom hurts. Took her to see the GP today and he gave her antibiotics for her chesty cough. Hmm

She has been screaming a lot for most of the day and about 10 mins ago when she had woken up screaming again, I managed to get out of her that her it was her "front bottom" that hurts. I asked her if it hurt when she did a wee, and she said that it did.

So I am 90% sure that she has a UTI.

Question is, how likely is that the antibiotics I got from the GP are going to work on her possible UTI?

Also, is there anything I can give her now that will alleviate the pain?

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Or could it be a kidney infection???

Paracetamol (Calpol) is best for pain relief in these circumstances. Antibiotics kick in pretty quickly so hopefully she won't suffer for much longer.

If she's been prescribed amoxicillin, nitrofurantoin, cefalexin or trimethoprim, then you're already on the right track. If not, ring the out of hours GP and tell them your suspicions so that they can give the appropriate medicine.

I am not claiming to be medically trained btw, but have history of UTI's and a younger sis who lost a kidney aged 5 following repeated UTI's (reflux).

Sure your DD will be fine though, try not to worry too much.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I've been giving her Calpol and it seems to be making a huge difference to the pain and high temperature.

The antibiotics she's been given are Cefaclor so not one of the ones on your list (but sound similar???) but hopefully they will make a bit of a difference. She's asleep now so i'll call the GP in the morning.

Thank you again.

I had a quick look. It's a broad spectrum one so may do the trick. However, if you find that she's still complaining/unwell into the weekend, then you definitely need to get her checked out again.

Good luck.

Thank you. I have also been googling it and came to pretty much the same conclusion.

Thanks for all the advice.

According to google Cefaclor is a broad spectrum antibiotic that amongst other things is prescribed for urinary tract infections so they should work for your dd.

Thank you!

Am starting to feel so much more positive. Not in such a panic!
