Chicken pox - anti histamine for 6 month old?

DD1 3.5 has just got over the pox. She had a fair few spots and a bit of a fever but got off fairly lightly I think. Now DD2 6 month has got it. She's really covered and her nappy area is one big patch of red.

I feel really guilty as I've cut back on BF though she gets 3 feeds a day. I'm doing calpol/calprofen as often as possible and using Virasoothe but she's too young for the Piraton that DD1 had.

Is there antihistamine suitable for a baby this age?

Don't know about antihistamine - try bicarb/oats in the bath and Poxclin which is wonderful stuff.

it would probably be possible for your gp to prescribe a smaller amount based on babys weight. Give them a ring tomorrow to see if this is possible. I am too tired to look it up for you Sad

Yes, I gave my DS piriton for it at that age but then took him to the docs who gave me another childs anti histamine. I found the cream calomine lotion was quite good.

Poor lad was covered, in his hair, on his feet and on his little balls! poor man.

it isn't a histamine reaction is it? I didn't think antihistamine has any effect at all.
Any GPs about?

cedmonds · 17/03/2011 23:25

I alway thought that antihistamine took away the itching aand had the added bouns on making them sleepy. My Ds had a regular dose of piriton at 6 month for something different it was worked out on his weight. I would give the GP a ring in the mornng and ask them.I would not give it to her without talking to gp though as you dont want to od her.

Bumperlicious · 17/03/2011 23:42

Think it was piriton that dd2 had last week at 5.5 months. It was whatever the gp had given dd1 (also 3.5) the week before (just used the same bottle but saw the gp first). Also recommend poxclin. Sympathies though. Can't say it helped dd2 sleep. Ended up driving her for hours at night!

Thanks for all your responses. I've just spoken to the GP and she's not happy for DD to have piriton. She's prescribed calamine cream which I'm just going to pick up from the pharmacy. If it doesn't improve today I'll try out of hours Dr tomorrow and see what they say.

The only bright side is at least I'm on mat leave. I would've used 3 weeks annual leave on the pair of them if I'd been at work.

poor thing

I don't think piriton would have any effect as I say as it isn't a histamine reaction so don't worry about not having it.

My ds had it appallingly badly when he was 4.5 months and was put on antivirals in hospital in the end

Poor thing
Hope she is better soon!
