My ds has picked up a tummy bug from nursery. Has projectile vomited over dh this morning (so glad i was at work) and since the he's had about 13 explosive nappies. Tried his milk at 3 but that cam upagain and he's managed some egg on toast.

Just wanted to know if anyone thinks i should be doing anything else? Should he have bedtime milk? How do i know if he's deydrated?

Huge thanks x

Sorry to see you never got a reply before bedtime - how is he now?

I wouldn't worry unduly - just keep drip feeding him water and checking his nappy. Change it as soon as you notice it's wet so that you can monitor how often he is weeing. Note it down if you need to - if he does get any worse then it will be good to have it to hand in case you need to take him to the doctors.

It is a total pain in the arse, but if you really don't think he's had enough liquid then it might be worthwhile setting your alarm for every two hours in the night, and giving him a few sips of water even if he is half asleep.

A doctor told me once that even a teaspoon of water every couple of hours is enough to stop your child getting dehydrated.

Don't worry too much about any food - try bananas, rice cakes and unbuttered toast if he feels up to it.

(Can you tell I have a lot of experience in this department? Grin)

Also, try him with some Dioralyte. You can either do this through the night or in the morning. It tastes pretty foul, so I ended up having to mix it with my ds's formula (but this is very fiddly and you have to make sure you mix them both up separately and then mix together).

Perhaps you could mix it with some weak squash? (Helps with calorie intake)

stop giving him milk, but do give him diarolyte. he can get v dehydrated just through diarhea.
also take him to the gp tomrrow first thing.

my ds2 had a v bad bout of d&v which ended in 3 days in intensive care and a few more days on obs at the hosp even though i gave him diarolyte from the start.
my Ds had about a diarhea every 30-40 minutes + vomiting

at hospital they toldme that it was better not to give children any food, only water/diarolyte

if you dont have diarolyte, you can cook some rice and give him the cooking water. it has everything in it.

it is only D&V but still, it is the second cause of death in children in the world

Thank you so much. He slept through the night bless him, apart from pooing everywhere at midnight! And has gone again this morning. Have only given him water so far and think i will pop to the chemists in a bit.

Thank you so much for replying

How is he now sleepysheep?

Has he managed to keep water down/do a wee?
